Question

Hello.

I just downloaded the trial version of BYE and have to say, despite all of the posts about difficulties with the older Canon 350D, I was able to connect with no issues.

I realize the 350D is an older model and many features won't be supported, but I am unable to successfully take any test shots and am wondering what I might be doing incorrectly.

I watched the video presentation all the way through and loved it, but it didn't really cover the differences in functionality for older cameras.

Here is what happens:

I am able to connect; once in the imaging section, the Camera Information Center is mostly empty and Quality is set to "IMAGE_UNKOWN+".  Is this normal?

In the Capture Plan Center, none of the options in the Shutter dropdown seem to work.  I know that bulb will not work without DSUSB, which I do not have, but I was hoping another option would work.  The error I get no matter what I try is:  "ERROR EDS_ERR_NOT_SUPPORTED : EDSDK.EdsSetPropertyData(cameraRef, SaveTo(11), 0, size(4), 2)"

I guess my question is: is there much I can do with the camera I have without DSUSB?

I know that many features won't work, like Live View, etc., but I was hoping that even so, there would be a number of things I could control.

Thanks very much for taking the time to read this and for any help anyone can offer.

Thanks very much. :)

I know I have a long way to go, but with all of the great advice, the new T5i and BYE, I'm sure I'll be able to improve.

I took my first real astrophotography photo yesterday (Mercury transit).  Wasn't able to get a shot without clouds and the sun spot isn't in focus.  It isn't very good, because I still don't really know what I'm doing, but it is a start I suppose.  :)

It's standard Image Posting Protocol that you provide some DETAILS of the Gear Used (127SLT and T5?) as well as the type of Image (Single Shot, Stacked Shot, Stacked AVI??) and some basic Settings (Exposure, ISO, etc) and Stacking/Post-Processing Method (DSS, PixInsight, RegiStax, AutoStakkert2, PhotoShop, etc).

So...  You're an AP Imager now, let us in on the Details!!    :D

Oops, sorry about that.  I had no idea.  :)

The shot was taken with the following:

Celestron NexStar 127 SLT

Canon 350D (at prime)

Single shot

ISO 400

1/1250th of a second

It was post-processed in Raw Therapee

I am second guessing the orange tint since the Sun is more yellow, as viewed from Earth.  I am seeing that a lot of people just use the result of the white light filter as is.

With the new camera, BYE will make the focusing easy. Find a bright star and look at the numbers until it is at a minimum. Takes 1 min or so with practice. Good enough for 30 second shots. Check focus every hour or so since it is temperature dependent.

Hi Aaron.

Yeah, that was one of the things I saw in the BYE live demo that I watched.  I can't wait.  The new camera is supposed to arrive tomorrow.  I'll be hooking up to BYE as soon as possible. :)

I have an Orion 07710 5.81-Inch ID Full Aperture Glass Telescope Solar Filter.

Almost the same issue here.  I woke up and it was completely socked in with clouds.  I set up the scope as best I could without a shadow and waited.  The clouds parted and I got about an hour of viewing in before the clouds took over for the day.

when you hookup your new camera you may need to change the SDK from the one you are using to get full advantage of the camera potential.

I'm not sure how to do that if you have checked the don't show this again on the splash screen.

maybe Guylain, Rick, or s3igel can chime in here on that subject. Ill have to do some playing around to see if I can figure out how.

Go to Settings -> Advance Settings and check the box that says Ask for camera drivers :)

Thanks Jim and Guylain.

I am almost beside myself with antisipation today.  :)

Unfortunately, I think we are towards the end of the UPS route.  :(

Happy to report that the new camera worked with BYE without any issues.  :)

I was uncertain about which driver to use (Canon or Canon 215), since they both list DIGIC V.  I ended up choosing Canon 215, since, I think, the T5i was made during that time period.

Haven't had a chance to take it out with the scope, due to rain for the next several days, but can't wait to get out there and take some real shots.

Thanks everyone for all the help and advice along the way and special thanks to Guylain.  :)
