Cannot control shutter speed Nikon D750

I set my camera to M and Bulb but when I take an image, the shutter opens but then doesn't close no matter what setting I have in BYN.  I can take exposures when I set the shutter speed to some other value other than BULB but then BYN can't control the camera shutter speed, only aperture and ISO.  I've tried just about everything. Updated my firmware on Nikon, cleared the cache, tried just about every camera setting, manual focus, automatic, A mode, S mode P mode, Automatic.  Still can't control shutter speed with BYN.  Very frustrated. Most recent version of BYN 2-9-19 download date.

Please tell us the BYN version number that you are using. "the most recent" will not mean anything to someone who reads this message a year or two from now.

If you have a lens on the camera for astrophotography the lens needs to be in manual focus mode to prevent the camera from trying to autofocus. With a dark sky, the camera will not be able to autofocus so the image will never start.

If the exposure is set to a timed value (not Bulb) and you select a short exposure in BYE (less than 1 second), then the exposure is totally controlled by the camera. If the exposure never finishes then it is a camera issue. It should also occur when operating the camera while not connected to the PC.

Also, if you have updated the camera firmware, you may need to choose a newer driver to fully support that firmware.

It's very hard to follow... you said you tried everything but no clear settings in your post. 

For BULB you need to set the camera dial to M.

For predefined shutter speed you need to set the camera dial to S (maybe M will work too, it depends on model)

Automatic focus will never work, it has to be manual... there is simply not enough light for the camera autofocus to work in low light condition.

Version 2.09.  How do I select a different driver?

I have my camera set to M and bulb.  Can't change the exposure time in BYN.

In the User Manual read the section titled Exposure Groups to see how to set the exposure time in a BYN imaging exposure group.. Basically the dropdown list in the Shutter column has all the non-Bulb values that are supported by your camera.

When you connect your camera you should see the option to select the drivers, if you do not then in BYN go to Settings -> Advance Settings and check the option "Ask camera drivers".

Be more specific in "Can't change the exposure time in BYN".  What does that mean?  You can choose an option from the pull down?  You can choose an option but BYN does not use it?  Step by step would help and a few print screens too.

I selected "show camera drivers" in the Advanced menu.  That just gives me the option of selecting what camera I want when I connect.  I always chose Nikon D750, in the most recent "after 2016" list.  That is the only one that will connect.

 

The program seems very buggy.  Acts differently at various times.  Sometimes it will take an exposure and other times it just sits there with the Busy indicator going around in circles endlessly until I turn off the camera.  Very disappointed.

If this was a bug (not saying it is not, not yet at least) I'd be getting this error reported several times per week, if not every day.  So I think this is a camera setting somewhere, we just need to figure out what.  The version you are using has been released at least 1 one year ago so it is used by thousands of users already.

How long is your USB cable and are you using a hub?

I'm using the cable that came with the camera, about 16" long with a USB extension about 24".  I tried it without the extension, made no difference.

 

I saw someone else had this problem with a Nikon 5100.  I don't think he got it resolved either.

In the first sentence you say "can't change the shutter time in BYN". I the third sentence you say "I can select a different shutter speed in BYN..."

These two remarks are directly contradictory.

We are not looking over your shoulder and so only know what you tell us.

Trying to make sense of what you are saying I would assume that you mean "when I change the exposure duration in BYN and take a picture, the length of the exposure does not change". I have assisted new users on this forum for several years and do not recall any similar reports. I did try to look at posts from others with a D5100 who had problems when imaging with a D5100 and could not find any with an issue similar to yours.

As Guylain said, please provide detailed instructions, including screen shots when necessary to describe how to re-create the issue that you are seeing.

Yes, I meant 16 inches and 24 inches.  They are very short.

I did a factory reset on my Nikon and it seems to be working now, most of the time.  I'm getting random lockups when I go to take multiple images and the routine does not complete so I have to turn off the camera and start again.

That things are working better once you performed the Factory Reset indicates that there were one or more Camera Settings which were causing the bulk of the Frustations you encountered. 

This is all too common - especially on Nikon DSLRs.  Nikon offers so many settings in the various menus and controls of their higher-end DSLRs which they (Nikon) then fail to support through their SDK (Software Development Kit - written by Nikon).

You will be able to use BYN with your D750 - as so many other users do.  But you will need to do it with a number of the Camera's special Features turned OFF - because Nikon doesn't support them when connected via USB.

Some of the settings to turn OFF:  WiFi, Auto-Focus, Mirror Lockup, Long Exposure Noise Reduction.

Please don't get frustrated,  you can use BYN with your D750.  And once you learn the necessary settings, you'll have success and learn how strong your D750 Sensor is for AP Imaging.

Okay, we are getting somewhere now.

Please send me the new log file after you've done a factory reset.  I need one where you get the random lockup.  If you find you have too many log files in the log folder just delete them all, then try BYN until it locks up again and send me that log file.

 

BTW, your emails are bouncing, I get "mailbox is full: retry timeout exceeded".
