Darks with shutter closed

dts350z

Question

Since Canons can do in camera noise reduction, essentially taking darks with the shutter closed, is it possible to do that via the SDK?

That would allow for unattended darks to be mixed in or at the end of a capture plan.

I was thinking about doing that with my filter wheel, except a) the wheel can't currently be controlled from the capture plan, and B) I'm going to use all the slots anyway <_<.

But being able to close the shutter AND take darks would be awesome.

Bias frames are not temperature dependent, so they can be taken and used for images shot with that camera at different temperatures for several months.

Personally I don't use bias frames during image calibration. I use darks and dark flats, so Bias frames are not necessary.

In "The Old Days", the explanation from the DSLR Manufacturers was "A DSLR doesn't take any Exposures without Activating the Shutter; so why add it to the SDK".

However, as the addition of LENR (Long-Exposure Noise Reduction) has permeated to all but the lowest of Entry-level DSLRs, they DO now have (at least internally) the ability to take In-Camera Darks - Exposures with the Shutter Closed.

So, it would be hopeful (and helpful) if they (the DSLR Manufacturers) would start to expose (pun intended) that Feature in their SDK offerings.

(One can only hope...)

No, this is not possible sadly.
