64 bit computer with win 8 64bit

jimwc6491

Question

anyone

I have a computer with a 64-bit processor and I am running 32-bit win-8.

my question is will I be able to continue to run my 32-bit software if I upgrade my win-8 to 64bit?

I have heard story's where you have to buy all new software if you upgrade to win-64-bit.

such as  MS office which I use regularly, Explorer Etc.

I don't run Win8/8.1.  But same as Win7 64-bit, it has fully transparent support for 32-bit Apps.  There is no requirement to upgrade or buy new Apps.  (Any remaining old 16-bit Apps are left behind - but that happened with the WinXP->Vista migration)

THAT, however, is not the same story for certain Device Drivers which may be required by certain Hardware / Software (and unfortunately AP Imaging is rife with such Device Driver issues for older CCD / Planetary Cameras).

You may also be thinking of "Win 8 App" (which are the Tiled / Dockable little things that we used to call "Gadgets" or "Applets" before Microsoft decided that "The Future is in Emulating a SmartPhone on your Full-Powered PC), many of which are Free but only available through the "Windows App Store" (think Mac App Store / iTunes / Google Play / Amazon AppStore etc).  The Developers of some of your existing "classic" Windows PC Apps will also offer new "Win 8 App"-style updates - either Free or Small Fee or Full Price (their discretion).

As mentioned, all 32 bits app will run on 64 bits Windows... but some drivers may cause you painful headaches.

I run all my gear and equipment on W8 64 bits and everything works.  My only issue/beef was with the Orion SSAG auto guider, it would run fine in W7 64 bits but not W8 64 bits... that was until 3 months of trying I decided to downgrade (on the advice of others) the USB 3 ports to run as USB 2 ports in my Laptop BIOS settings... not for the fainted heart for sure.

One good point to note is that you can not upgrade from 32 bits to 64 bits... it requires a full re-install Windows.

Thanks for your prompt reply. I am thinking of doing the upgrade mainly so I can speed up my 64bit machine for post processing. rather than buying a new computer.

my laptop runs fine for mount and camera control, and the download of images.

What do you believe is the main Bottleneck during current use of your Laptop ??

How much Memory and what CPU ??

In many "borderline" cases, simply moving to 64-bit version of same OS will not make much difference...

my laptop is a 64bit machine with a 64bit operating system.

everything runs fine on the laptop.

its my desktop that I want to use for post processing.

I want to upgrade it because it is a 64bit machine running a 32bit OS.

some of the better post processing software only runs on 64bit.

I just looked in my windows 8 box it has a 64bit disk in it I don't know if I can use it or not since I used the key to install the 32bit OS.

Rick (or anyone else),

I have BYE running on a Win 7 64 bit but get an error message when trying to connect to my 20D claiming the 20D won't work on Win 64 bit. After changing the Communication settings on my 20D to PTP my machine running Win 7 64 bit now recognizes my 20D. Is this now a software issue?

Thanks so much!

The 20D will never work on any Windows 64 btis, ever.

This is because Canon does not have any 64 bits drivers for older DIGIC II models.

You are out of luck... unless you get a 32 bits Windows computer, you will never be able to remote control your 20D for taking images :(

Well, just installed Win 7 32 bit on my Dell N5110 and no go - same error as before.

Suggestions?

Is your camera still set to PTP?  You need to set it to "PC Control", not PTP.

And you need to install the 20D drivers first.

You also need to select DIGIC II drivers in BYE when connecting your camera.

Do all of these and it will connect.
