Question

Hi, trying to get Backyard Nikon to talk to my D850.  Version 2.1.2 - Premioum Edition::1502.  Error is below.  My camera is showing up in Windows as a Portable Device and there isn't anything obviously wrong with the drivers.    Help!

...And yes, I have tried all the recommended trouble shooting steps like 3 times...

19:42:21  Attempting to connect camera...

19:43:40  Nikon/D850 drivers initialized.

19:43:48  Camera Not Found!  Make sure it's connected to the PC and turned ON :)

According to the Supported Cameras table for BYN, the D850 is supported and has been confirmed to work with BYN either by the BYN developers or other users.

You are using a purchased license. Has BYN ever worked with your camera? Not sure why you would purchase a license without first verifying that it will work.

  1. Make sure that the camera's memory card is empty or nearly empty.
  2. Make sure that no other applications are connected to the camera.
  3. Use a short cable that is known to be good.
  4. Do other applications work with the camera?
  5. Try uninstalling BYN and installing it to a different folder.
  6. Make sure that the camera's shooting mode is Manual or BULB before trying to connect.
  7. Try a factory reset on the camera.
  8. If you have updated the camera's firmware, then you may need to update to the latest release of BYN 2.1.3 RC.

Let us know how you make out.

Please be specific in your problem report. "I tried everything and nothing works" is too vague. By telling us what you have tried that doesn't work we can suggest other remedies that you may not have thought of.

Sorry for getting back late - but I have limited time under the stars.  I eventually determined that the problem was associated to the camera to computer *cable* I was using.  While the cable was "known good" in that it worked with a different camera, it worked intermittently to poorly on the D850.  In one night out with a different cable things generally worked OK.  So suggest you add a "try a different cable" to your troubleshooting steps.  -Dick Locke

Back on May 14th I suggested that as one of your troubleshooting steps you could "Use a short cable that is known to be good. " It was step #3.

You can test much of BYN's functionality while sitting at your kitchen table. It does not have to be nighttime, nor do you need to have a telescope, or a lens for that matter, connected to the camera. Just the camera connected to your laptop, via a USB cable. To confirm much of BYN's functionality that is all that you need.
