32-bit cameras on 64-bit OS

mAnKiNd

Question

Hello everybody,

I'm after a camera with big pixels i.e. 350D / XT, 20D, 20Da, 30D (another discussion as to why), but on the BYEOS compatibility chart, it states they only work on 32-bit machines. All my laptops/pc's are windows 64-bit.

My question is; could I use something like WOW64 (which I've never used before) https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/WoW64 or similar to run the camera drivers and BYEOS?

How would I go about this on a 64-bit machine?

Any suggestions would be great.

TIA

Minos

No! Canon has dropped support for those older cameras and does not provide a 64-bit kernel-level driver for them.

If you have a computer with a lot of capacity, you could run a 32-bit Windows XP in a Virtual Machine and run BYE there, but that is complicated and requires a powerful machine.

There is nothing that BYE can do to allow what you want with the 64-bit O/S. Your camera needs to have a DIGIC III or later processor for 64-bit.

Thanks Rick!

As the compatibility chart suggests, BYEOS and these models should work perfectly well on a 32-bit machine so i'll find me a good 32-bit machine (thanks for the netbook advice, i do autoguide) and install everything on that machine and use it when I take out one of these cameras.

Sincerest thanks

There is one thing I'm unsure of though, if you could please clear it up for me. Assume I have one of these 32-bit cameras up and running on a good 32-bit machine. Will images show up on the preview in BYEOS after acquisition, or will they be stuck inside the SD card of the camera? Considering the connection is made with a serial cable and not usb, it should be the latter right?

Thank you

The Canon 30D Driver requires true 32-Bit Windows (not 32-bit Compatibility Mode), and BYE requires the Canon Driver for every DSLR that it Supports.

DSLR Remote Pro foregoes all Canon Drivers as it only uses the DSLR as a PTP-mode Device (the PTP-mode Driver is part of Windows 7/8/10 itself).
