Time vs. Bulb mode

scottyaggie

Question

So I'm using a D60 and I have the DSUSB-IR1 from shoestring astronomy which appears to function normally, meaning I can open and close the shutter with their software "DSUSB checker" to create an exposure as long as I want. However, when I set up the bulb function in BYN, it only takes a 1 second exposure, no matter how long I have it set in the Capture Plan center.

My current thinking is that it has something to do with the shutter signal either being on throughout the exposure vs. a signal at the beginning and a signal at the end. The reason I say that is that the D60 user manual distinguishes between a "Bulb" mode and a "Time" mode. I attached an excerpt from the user manual. When you set the camera to the IR remote release mode, it forces the "Time" mode.

Can you help?

Are you selecting the DSUSB cable in BYN?

Choose the absolute last option in the list, it is called "DSUSB_D40" I think.  This uses the same protocol but on the D40 the cable is invoked a little bit differently than the other models.  I suspect this is the same with the D60 since they are very closely related.

Please confirm that you are connected to your D60 by BOTH USB Cables - one directly from Laptop to the Camera USB Port and the second from the Laptop to the DSUSB and then on to the Camera Shutter via IR Port.

As to using a DSUSB-IR1, please notice that the BYN Support Grid states:

"BackyardNIKON has been tested with Shoestring Astronomy DSUSB serial cables"

It could be that the IR-Shutter Port on the Camera is implemented differently than the standard Shutter Port.  It does sound to be so from your excerpt of the Nikon Manual.

Let's see if Guylain has encountered this before..
