Trying to get BYE on a new computer

diane_miller

Question

I have BYE on my husband's Win10 computer.  I have now installed Win 10 with Parallels on my Mac Book Pro and want to install BYE there.  I have just downloaded the latest version (3.1.8) on that computer.  My account shows both a Trial edition and a Premium edition.  I am trying to activate the version I just downloaded and neither license key from those purchases will work.  And neither will copying and pasting the lengthy code.  I have to put it in one character at a time and the characters won't even show until I click somewhere in the entry box and then go back to the first character.

One version just said the code was not valid.  The other one (and I don't know which one was) said to download the latest version, which I did.  It shows in my Win 10 applications folder with today's date, but when I start that one it won't take either of the activation codes.

Diane,

The trial license is probably expired, so obviously you should try to install the Premium license. Almost every one who has trouble installing the license is either typing it in incorrectly or has entered their Identifier (login ID) incorrectly. Copy and past of the key from the My Purchases area of the web site is the way to go. Because of the font, it is difficult to differentiate the lowercase letter 'l' from the number "1" and the uppercase letter "O" from the number "0". Copy/paste eliminates that uncertainty.

If your typing is not showing up in Windows, then maybe Parallels is not set up to forward keypresses correctly between operating systems.

Does your Windows 10 VM have Internet access? It may need that to validate the license (just once).

Hi Diane,

Your key is active.

Make sure you use the purchase key with your correct identifier, it is "diane_miller" and is is case sensitive.

What I find odd is that your key is not showing until you click elsewhere?  This seems like a Parallel display issue... and this may be a contributing factor.

Also, when you type in the key, all letters are lowercase so if you see what looks like an uppercase letter I it is acttually a number 1.  Same thing for the letter o and number 0.

Keep us posted.

I am using diane_miller, all LC.   I am using ALL LC letters and think I can distinguish the numbers from the letters.  It would be REALLY nice if I could copy and paste but it didn't work on the Dell laptop several months ago just as it isn't working with the Parallels installation now on a different computer.

The typing DOES show up, but only after I click somewhere in the field then go back to the first character -- as I said.  Why the hell don't you use KWs that don't confuse 0 with O and 1 with l???  OR make it possible to actually copy and paste???

Yes, VM has internet access -- the problem occurs before I get to that point.

Sorry to sound irritated but is there some way I can actually USE this software???

Hi Diane,

Letters in lower case DOES make letters and numbers distinguishable.

As for cut&paste... it works.  The issue is your parallel/computer config that prevents it, it is NOT BackyardEOS that prevents it.

BackyardEOS is a .net application and as a result a WINDOWS ONLY application.  Running in a VM is not officially supported and never has been.  You are trying the use the application in an environment that it was not designed for.  Please be aware of that.

Hi Diane,

There are quite a few people using BYE/BYN in a VM successfully.  I can not comment on any flavor of VM over another as I don't use any VM myself.

From hearing people comment over the years it seems like 50% of those trying to run in a VM end up going back to a pure windows computer.  This is not because VM are not good, but rather because we deal with cameras which are hardware devices and for them to work in a VM the host computer and the VM must play nice together.  It is an additional  layer of complexity for sure.

Maybe someone with more real life experience with Parallel or Boot Camp can chime in.

Use the Forum Search tool (see "Search..." in the Orange Bar...) to search for "camp" and "parallel" and "vmware".

You'll find almost a dozen Threads.  Some end in "Frustration".  Some end in "Success" - either of the "Found how to make xxxx run BYE/BYN on my iMac" or "Decided to get a Real Windows Laptop" variety...

And...  You'll see that the Difficulties almost always turned out to be Configuration Issues with the Dual Boot / VM Software...
