Cannot Connect with Backyard EOS and Canon 30d

Question

I am having issues with getting my Canon 30d (trail version) and BY EOS.  I have seen another post with the same problem suing a Canon 20d and this is the same problem.  The solution is to ensure the drivers are installed, but here is the problem, Canon does not make a driver for Win 7(32 or 64 bit).  So how can I get BY EOS to connect?

Paul,

The Camera Support Grid for BYE describes that the DIGIC II, like the 20D and 30D cameras are no longer supported by Canon. This is why there are no drivers for Windows 7 or later.

That said, BYE includes an older version of the Canon SDK that will work with your camera, so subject to the restrictions listed in the Support Grid. The biggest caveat is that the Windows verson must be 32-bit. The camera will not work on a 64-bit version of Windows.

Yes, Canon does not make a driver for 32-bit Windows 7, but others have had luck installing the Windows XP driver on 32-bit Windows 7 systems.

Just to give you a description of my setup.  I am using the Shoestring DSUSB and cables to the Canon 30d.  This is what is described as supported by BYE.  My OS is Win 7 32 bit, also described as tested on BYE and is supported.  I also loaded the driver from the Canon EOS CD. Hopefully this is the driver in question because Canon Support web page does not have a Win XP driver to download.    Is there a site I can go to to get the Win XP driver?

The Shoestring is ONLY for bulb images > 30 seconds.

You still need the regular camera usb cable to connect the camera to the computer and for that you absolutely need the Canon 30D drivers installed on your PC.  Since this is an older camera Windows does NOT have these drivers pre-installed, you need to install them from the CD that came with the camera.  If you install "EOS Capture" from that CD that should install the Canon 30D drivers.

Yes, the XP/Vista 32 bits drivers will work on W7/8/10 provided your Windows is 32 bits and not 64 bits.

Regards.

Thanks for the reply, but I still have question.  I can connect via a regular usb, and download images with this cable, but I cannot do a remote control of the shutter with a PC/laptop application. Can I remotely control the shutter using this cable and BYE?   The Canon 30d will allow remote control using a TC-80N3 hand held, which I have, but I cannot make a connection to the PC.  My previous setup involved a cheap Chinese type remote connected shutter release (N3 which has a 2.5mm female connector) to a cable supplied from Oceanside Photo and telescope (their OPT USB-to-2.5mm cable for Images plus) this allowed me to remotely program a "shutter plan" from PC to the camera.

Using the USB I got it connected and it is working fine.  This threw me because I thought the Canon 30d shutter could not be controlled through the USB connector.  I am all set.  Thanks.

The shutter will and can be controlled via usb but you are limited to 30 seconds in TV mode without a serial/DSUSB cable in addition to the regular USB cable.

Regards.
