Crash and freeze are two different behaviors.  Crash is where an app experiences an unrecoverable error and shuts down.  Freeze is where the app simply becomes unresponsive to user input.  A more detailed description of your symptoms would help.

I cannot think of a single instance where re-installing BYE to the same folder has fixed anything.  So if you feel that you need to re-install BYE, you should choose a different installation folder.  This will workaround problems due to a corrupted configuration file that is not replaced during a re-install to the same folder.

Which version of BYE are you using? This is always important!

If you are not using BYE 3.1.6 you should upgrade! After the upgrade do you still see the same behavior?

Which version of Windows is BYE running under? 32-bit or 64-bit?

Which SDK version are you choosing from the "Select your camera driver" pop-up? Canon, Canon215, or Canon210?  Both Canon and Canon215 should work with your 40Dm so try the other one.

The vast majority of connection issues are hardware issues, not software issues.

Exactly when does BYE freeze? What actions are you taking and how long after the last action does it freeze?

How long is the USB cable between the camera and the PC? Are they directly connected or are you going through a hub?

Does Windows recognize the camera?

Does the Canon EOS Utility application work or does it freeze too?

Have you ever successfully used BYE with the 40D?

What changed on your system between the last time it worked and the first time you experienced your symptoms?

Have you tried connecting a different camera?

Have you tried replacing the USB cable?  You should use the shortest cable possible for your testing and only go to a longer cable and a hub once you are sure that BYE and the camera are functioning well with each other. That way you can be sure that the issue is due to cabling.

These same items have been suggested dozens of times in previous posts.  It may help you to browse through them and see how others fixed their connection issues.
