Southern Hemisphere Slew

Question

Hi,

 

I am using BYEOS in New Zealand.

I am using a NexStar 6SE with wedge.

It connects and works fine except when i try to use the slew controls in BYEOS. The ease west directions seem reversed. When a slew east on the PC the scope moves west. Is there a set up needed for ther southern hemisphere?

This is rather lengthy, so please bear with me.

First I will say that using the NSEW or Up, Down, Left, Right buttons to change the scope's position are not Slews, as stated by the OP and others. Slews are movements with a set of destination coordinates provided at the start of the slew. Like Go To Sirius, with the RA and DEC of Sirius as the destination. The movement capability provided by the Telescope Simulator for .NET and BYE do not slew to a destination. They move one motor in one direction with no specific destination in mind. Movement starts when one of the button is pressed and stops, or resumes tracking, when that button is released. These use an ASCOM method called MoveAxis and it has its own set of rules.

So I tested BYE with the ASCOM Telescope Simulator for .NET and here is what I found. In all my testing the simulator telescope was configured as a German Equatorial telescope. There would be a whole different set of test cases for an Alt-Az configuration and perhaps a third set of test cases for an alt-az mount on a wedge (what ASCOM calls an Equatorial mount). I will leave it to others to test those cases.

Again. This is using the simulator's buttons, NOT BYE's buttons.

In the northern hemisphere the Simulator's buttons are like typical map/compass directions with N on top, below them are W (on the left) and E(on the right). S is below E/W. here is how they behave in the simulator:

Pressing N moves the Declination toward the North Pole (Dec value increases). The S button has the opposite effect. Pressing the W button lowers the RA value and pressing the E button raises the RA Value. All of this seems correct.

Now using BYE with the simulator and the telescope site in the Northern hemisphere. The Up button behaves like the N button the Down button behaves like the S button. The Left button behaves like the W button and the Right button behaves like the E button.

This seems as it should be.

Now I changed the site latitude to the Southern hemisphere.

In the Simulator the N and S buttons swapped position, with S above W and E and N below it. This seems to mean that the intention is that the top button moves the scope toward the pole in both hemisphere cases. Pressing the top S button did move the scope toward the southern pole, with the declination values becoming more negative. The N button moved the scope to higher Dec values, simulating movement toward the North Celestial Pole. The W and E buttons behavior did not change

Finally, I brought BYE into the mix, while keeping the site in the southern hemisphere.

In BYE pressing the Up button moved the scope in the opposite direction from the S button in the simulator. That is Up moved toward the equator not toward the pole. This seems wrong to me.

The Left and Right buttons moved the same as the W and E buttons in the simulator, and were as expected.

This means that the only differences between the behavior of the simuator and the behavior of BYE were when the telescope site was in the southern hemisphere and occurred with the declination movement, not the RA movement as the OP suggested. Again, I will leave it to others to test BYE and the Simulator with Alt-AZ and Equatorial (wedge-mounted alt-Az) configurations.
