Issue connecting 5D Mark ii

adosaj

Question

Hi,

I tried connecting a 5D Mark ii to BYE on Windows 10 Pro and it failed. I wanted to verify what the error message is telling me. I’m guessing that I will need a 32 bit version of Windows to get this camera working with BYE? Image of the error message is attached. Thank you!

BYE 3.2.3 will run on either 32-bit or 64-bit Windows. So that is not your problem.

Item 2) from your screenshot relates to DIGIC II cameras that do not have a 64-bit low-level driver. This is because Canon dropped support for them before the first 64-bit version of Windows. The 5D Mk II is a DIGIC IV camera and Windows 10 has a low-level driver built into the O/S.

Are you connecting the camera to the PC with a short USB cable that you know is working? You cannot use the HDMI cable for remote control. USB cables that are longer than 5 meters may not work, unless they are a USB Extension cable. To troubleshoot your cabling, use the short USB cable that came with the camera.

Does Windows see the camera when it is connected to the PC with a good, short USB cable? If so, it will be listed in the Windows Device Manager.

If the camera has WiFi capability, is it disabled? It must be for BYE to connect.

Astroman133, thanks for your reply. I have tried two different cables, they were 3ft and 6ft data cables. Windows does not seem to see the camera by itself. I have also tried it with MacOS and the Photos app did not see the camera either. The Mark ii does not have WiFi, so that is not an issue. I’m at a loss as to what’s going on. Wondering if it’s a setting on the camera that might be causing issues.

You need to figure out why Windows is not seeing the camera first. If Windows can't see the camera, neither will BYE.

The only in-camera setting that might make a difference is if the connection is set to PTP. Go through the camera menu, and if you see an option re: connection and PTP is selected, select the other values and try again.

Keep us posted.

It might also be an issue caused by your Windows installation missing a Runtime Library that the Canon SDK requires. Admin knows which software the SDK requires.

That is a good point, it's been the cause of some issues in the past. This, said, looks like from the snippet the OP provided the SDK has initialized.

Start by performing a Factory Reset on the Camera - instructions in Canon Manual or online.

Since we know that 5DmkII Cameras work with Win10 and MacOS and BYE 3.2.3, a wayward setting in your Camera is the easiest (and least expensive) place to start.

Sorry, had to leave the camera for other stuff in the house. I have done the reset and it’s still behaving the same. I have used 3 different cables, one is new and another one is my iOptron iPolar cable, and I know it works. There are some custom functions that I ”cleared,” but they still appear. That might be how it is suppose to be, I’m unsure. I have attached an image of the screen I’m talking about. Thank you all for your help thus far!

At this point I’m thinking that the usb port on the camera must be bad. There is no way for me to do anything on the computer side if it is not detected. As far as settings on the camera itself, I don’t see anything that would affect the usb connection. In addition, since this model does not have WiFi, I’m sure there is no setting to change on the camera. I think my next move is switch to a different camera. Thank you for all your help with this.

Just to close the loop on this. It was indeed an issue with the camera. I got a hold of another 5D Mk ii and it connected without issue. I do appreciate your help, great community here.

Oh, glad you figured it out, and at the same time sorry to hear the camera is defective :(
