R6 mkII Camera "SHUTDOWN message"

rbguppy

Question

Windows 11 on Mele Quieter 3Q

USB Cable is data only, not charging

Backyard EOS 3.2.3 Classic Edition (Tried both Camera 1 and Camera 2)

On the R6 I selected “Choose USB connection app” as “Photo Import/Remote Control”

When connected and powered the Camera image mounts with the drives on left side labelled “Canon EOS R6m2” and I can expand it to show the two SD cards marked “SD1” and “SD2”. I tried to prevent the mounting through admin commands at the Terminal but they still mount when the Camera gets connected. Also the camera’s flip screen displays the remaining battery life (horizontally) and an image of a PC below that.

When I start up BYE can select “connect” on the image of the camera it then prompts for the for the proper DIGIC models which I select as the topmost (after 2008).And the proper screen comes up for a moment and then disappears. The log states:

“EOS-R6MkII CONNECTED”

“Camera SHUTDOWN”. Which occurs one second later.

Attempted one more time with the same result. Tried waiting for camera to rest and insert more charged batteries but same thing happens!

The next time I attempted the BYE went bye and terminated. I restarted the software and it repeated the fail of the software. And again so I shut everything down. Restarted and now it just says connection problems? “Camera Not Found! Make sure it’s connected to the PC….

While the BYE is negotiating with the R6 the camera flip screen is restored to the usual view with shooting data.

Thanks for any assistance!

The R6 MkII is on the Supported Cameras list, therefore it is working for other users. The most likely reasons that it is failing for you are 1) an in-camera setting that BYE cannot see or control, 2) a faulty cable, 3) a faulty camera.

Did BYE work with this camera previously, like with the free Trial license? You did try BYE with a free Trial License before purchasing the Classic license, didn't you? It exists to verify connectivity and operation of the camera at home, before taking it to the field and it is cost-free and risk-free. If you cannot get BYE to work with your camera and decide to give up, there is no refund for the purchase of your Classic license since there is no way to return the license to O'Telescope.

Also, do not post your license key, even in a screenshot, in this or any other public forum!

I believe that the SHUTDOWN message is coming from the camera to tell BYE and the Canon SDK that it is shutting down. This cannot be externally controlled as it is often a safety feature that the camera uses to protect itself from damage.

Do you have an autofocus-capable lens on the camera, a manual lens, a body cap, or is it connected to a telescope?

Are you using the USB cable that came with the camera?  This cable supports remote control. I do not believe that the camera supports charging the battery while it is in the camera, regardless of the cable type or the capabilities of the USB port that it is plugged into.

Did you try doing a factory reset of the camera? This may reset a camera setting that is preventing the camera from being controlled remotely.

Camera1 and Camera 2 are different executables built from the same code base. They will behave identically, according to their individual settings. They are only present to support controlling multiple cameras from the same PC at the same time.

Make sure that WiFi is disabled in the camera and that the camera is configured to support image capture when no lens is connected to the camera. These settings are not available for all camera models!

Your camera has separate BULB and Manual modes. I am not sure which is correct for BYE. Troll through the archives here or try both options to see if they make a difference.

Make sure that Face+Tracking LiveView Autofocus is set to some other option that does not prevent Liveview from being controlled remotely. While this is not available for all models, it is most often successful when set to a single-point AF mode.

Try changing the connection app from "photo import/remote control" to "choose when using the EOS Utility". The EOS Utility is a Canon-supported remote control application. It uses the Canon SDK (Software Development Kit) that BYE also uses.

If none of these suggestions solve your issue, then you should install the Canon EOS Utility and test it with your camera. If you see a similar error then you should contact Canon Support. In the past, if a camera works with the EOS Utility then it will work with BYE.

Let us know how it goes.

This indicates that some other App - possibly auto-promoted by the Windows App Store - is being connected to your Camera.  There can only be ONE Connected App at a time.

Figure out how to "Disconnect" / Terminate that App.  Then try again with BYE.

Thanks for that extensive response!!! I’m away from home now to recharge before attempting again on Tuesday? Monday is a holiday so I’m enjoying time away from technology but I will attempt all your suggestions on Tuesday. Again thanks very much for the advice!!!
