Two weird errors

catherineryanhyde

Question

I'm Using BYN Premium 2.1.2 with a D810A. For some time now I've been having a problem with download timeouts cancelling sessions. Someone on this forum suggested it might be the data cable, which is possible. But now I have two more unexplained errors. Twice in the past few days it has stopped after a download, but rather than the log reporting the error, it says the session finished successfully. But it took maybe three images and I can clearly see it was set to take nine or ten. Then, three times in the last two nights it has gotten a third or halfway through a sequence/session and cancelled itself, and the explanation the log gives is that I need to check to be sure the camera is set to M. Of course that makes no sense because it just took a bunch of images before canceling, and nobody snuck out there and changed any settings. I have another setup that runs a different telescope and mount. Same camera model, same version of BYN, and I'm not getting these errors on it. I don't know if that means the problem is in the camera, or if the software became corrupted somehow on the one computer. I'd be grateful for any ideas. Thanks.

Not sure how to reply directly. I never installed Anti-Virus software on either computer. It doesn't come automatically on Windows 10 these days, does it? Also, as for the USB connection, I've replaced the cables multiple times, and I'm using those plastic... no idea what you call them... that clip around the connection on the camera end and pin it into place. So I'm not sure what more I can do to create a secure USB connection.

Loose USB connection. Just a small wiggle may have the camera disconnect from the computer, even if for 1 millisecond. Is your USB cable properly tethered with no snag?

Yes, Windows Defender is part of Windows 10, but I don't know whether it is automatically activated or not.

I've been using the built-in Windows Defender anti-virus for about 10-12 years now exclusively.  It's pretty good.  Windows Defender is automatically enabled and updated on W10/W11, unless you purchased a pre-built PC / Laptop with another anti-virus pre-installed.

I don't need virus software because these computers are dedicated astro. I don't go online with them, or do email. Do you think Windows Defender could be an issue? And what am I going to do about the other two errors if I have the cable fixed at the camera end and have replaced the cables multiple times? Do you think the connection on the cable end might be loose due to mild cable snags over time? I have to do something. This is just too disruptive.

Still Windows Defender is installed by default with Windows 10. You need to verify that it is disabled, if that is what you want.

If you are able to use a different camera and everything works then you know that Windows 10, BYN, cable, etc. are good on this system.

It is possible that the USB connection on the camera is flaky, or that the camera itself is malfunctioning.

I doubt that Windows defender is the issue, I've never seen this in my development environment, and I've been using it for 10-12 years.  Typically, it's the Norton of world antivirus software that causes issues sometimes.

It's difficult to isolate the root cause, it used to work (and still works with another computer with same camera model and same software version).  This is a clue that points to a physical environment issue, not software.

Since you have 2 D810 cameras, swap them and see if the error persists.

I was shooting with both at the same time last night, and the one I was not complaining about also canceled a session over download issues. I'm not blaming the software. I'm just hoping somebody has suggestions.
