Drift Alignment

carnbrea

Question

Is the alignment procedure the same as using a diagonal with an eyepiece

So when choosing a suitable star on the meridian and the star drifts down do I still move the star to the left and if it goes up move to the right?

It is exactly that.

This feature in BYE/BYN replaces the need for a illuminated eyepiece.  You still have to do the drift alignment, but you use your DSLR which is already in place to drift align instead of swapping it for an illuminated eyepiece.

Regards,

Hi, I think it would be great if you had implemented the DARV method(Drift Alignment by Robert Vice, the link mentioned above) right in the BYE! It could work like this: connect mount to the PC in order to control RA guiding interface, setup connection through PHD in BYE, choose time interval for DARV, for example 5 minutes means that it will send RA+ signal for 2.5 min and then RA- for the rest 2.5 min, then the result image will show up and BYE measures the angle between lines. Profit! :) Honestly, it would already be great to implement the basic functionality without computing the angle. What do you think, Guylain? By the way, thanks for the amazing software!

Have you tried PHD2's drift alignment method? It seems to work well, once  you get used to it.

I should have said that I use Astrotrac with 200mm lens and as far as I know in order to use PHD polar alignment feature one have to have a separate guider camera like QHY, Orion etc. So in my case I'm dealing only with DSLR and laptop. Astrotrac has autoguider port and I'm gonna use DARV method with handmade RA-controller for now.

Thank you I've downloaded the article and it seems very good and looks a lot quicker and easier

I've drift aligned before with a reticle eyepiece but took me ages to get it correct

I will give it a try when the clear skies return
