Problem with pre-release 3.1.18 and Canon 250D SL3

I understand that the Canon SL3 is not yet supported, but I saw a post in July about supporting the SL3 in pre-release version 3.1.18.  When I test the camera with that version,  it connects properly  but when I click the Frame and Focus button the camera LCD shows an error message and BYE locks up.  The message is "Error 70   An error prevented shooting.  Turn the camera off and on again or re-install the battery"  Turning the camera off and on has no effect.  I have to reinstall the battery to reset it.    Please advise if I am doing something wrong or if I can provide more information.

Yep very sorry to report my 250D also gave the same Error 70. Probably some random little thing that's throwing everything into disarray. At the end of the day mate, I can work around it but I know from when I made .net apps that I hate it when a bug won't go away.

Send me the logfile, I can do anything to pursue this without the new RC2 logfile.

It's hard somethings to debug blindly... I honestly don't know why the 250D is the only Canon camera out of 30+ supported models that is throwing that error. I may have to wait until someone is willing to lend me a 250D.  I'm willing to bet that I would find the root cause in less that a day with a 250D to test with.

Just stumbled upon this error for myself this evening--exact same circumstances and error as originally reported. Same camera (SL3) using the latest BYE release version. Following the thread...

I also tried BYE 3.1.18 as well as 3.2 with the EOS 250D under both Firmware versions 1.0.1 and 1.0.2, always getting the Err70 message.

Yep the 250D had to be special now didn't it! The only thing I miss it not being able to use FWHM to focus. Any way you borrow a 250D from a retailer new you? I hope for your sake for than anything you can figure it out eventually.

I am following this thread as I've considered a 250D (called an SL3 here) as an upgrade for my older 450d.

I assume that the whole COVID situation has taken precedence over this, but I wondered if there was any indication that this problem couldn't be solved.  I'd hate to take a risk on buying a new camera, only to find out it won't work with BackyardEOS.

I made the error of purchasing BYE to use with my SL3 without making sure of its compatibility (my mistake). Still hoping that this will be resolved, but in the meantime it's worth noting that APT works with my SL3 live view (at least in a brief test), which is good. I'd still rather use BYE if the compatibility problem can be fixed. EOS Utility (obviously) works, too. Perhaps a workaround is to use EOS Utility to get things set up (framing, focus, etc) and then BYE for controlling the image-taking.

I figured that the EOS utility would be a work around.  The fact that APT seems to work would indicate the it's something that can be solved eventually.  

If I decide to go with an SL3, I'm fairly close to Guylain (I'm just outside of Toronto), so maybe I could send him an SL3 to fix the problem before I start using it.  That would probably have to wait until the COVID situation settles down a bit though...

I have never used APT, but it is possible that it uses a different method to communicate with the camera than does BYE. BYE uses the Canon EOS SDK which is a from Canon, but they do not support it! That means that Canon makes the software available to 3rd party developers but makes no guarantee that it will work for all cameras nor do they make any commitment that they will fix any issues with the SDK in a timely manner. That said, the EOS Utility also uses the EOS SDK, so if the EOS Utility works it is likely that BYE can work. There are two more complications. First, Guylain can only use the North American release of the SDK and it is possible that Canon has not yet released a version of the SDK in North America that supports the 250D. To make matters worse, Canon's release of a version of the SDK that supports a particular camera model can be delayed by several months after the release of the camera. Even when Canon does release a version of the SDK that supports the 250D, Guylain will have to figure out what is different about this model and make BYE work with it. In the past Guylain has had to rent a camera to test BYE and make it work. This also often takes months because he has had to get on a waiting list to rent the camera.

The point of my above comments gets down to this: If your desire to do astrophotography is only casually-related to the 250D, you may want to look through the list of supported cameras (the link is at the bottom of this web page) and select a different model that is already supported.

I was considering the SL3 for other reasons beyond astrophotography as well.  I may end up with dedicated astro camera at some point the future, but a new Canon that can use my existing lenses is fairly good selling point for my other photography needs.  

I'm also considering a T7i, or maybe even at T8i, but I know only the T7i is fully supported right now.

I have found the 250D (200D MkII here in Australia) to be a great DSLR astro camera in spite of the above problems (got mine astro modded)(attached to a 10" F4 newtonian). Initially APT did have problems with the 250D when I tried it out (live view worked but exposures ticked over indefinitely). I contacted the developer and we tried a few fixes of which one worked perfectly and has now been incorporated into the newest release. BackyardEOS is a great piece of software. Just a shame the very camera I decided to buy has a hissy fit in liveview, which completely precluded using BackyardEOS for focusing.

It is not as convenient, but you can use Snap images from Frame and Focus for focusing rather than LiveView.

Looks like I just fixed this.  I decided to purchase a 250D and an RP last week to add to my arsenal of cameras for testing. 

This will be in the next 3.2.0.RC8 pre-release.  Hopefully I'll be able to upload in the next few days.

Two SL3 owners here in Arizona.  Latest BYEOS worked fine. Cameras focused remotely with a Canon 24 mm and a Sigma 18-300.  All functions appear to work flawlessly now.

Thanks for the trial extension.  All tests were done indoors due to smoke from wildfires and clouds from monsoon storms so we were unable to connect a scope.  We also discussed the non-astro BYEOS uses in a studio setting.

And what were these non astro uses for BYEOS in a studio setting? Being a pro that has mostly been shooting table tops I'm curious.
