I just heard from Nikon.... they are sending me a D850 in March for 2 weeks.  Let hope I can figure out the issue is during this time frame with the camera on hand.

I would have happily sent you mine.

Do you have an estimate for when BYN might work with the D850? End of March?

Thanks,

Gene

Can't say until I get the D850.  If should be quick unless there is something really wrong with the SDK.

I suspect Nikon did not provide the correct SDK.  I say this because the structure of the downlaoded SDK is differenct compared to all other models.  I'll wee the I get it.

Thanks anyway.

Well understanding SDK's are above my pay grade, so good luck and Godspeed

I sold the D5300 and the D810 so now I (patiently :) ) wait.

Oh.... but the D810 has been supported for about 2+ years now.  It's the D850 we are talking about in this thread.

It is good that you asked the question first.

Does the new firmware actually fix an issue that you have or provide new behavior that is important to you? If it does not provide any benefit, then why rush to install it?

In the past a Nikon firmware update was not compatible with the existing version of the SDK, and there was no way to roll back to the previous firmware. This meant that those cameras would not work with BYN until Nikon released a new SDK and a new version of BYN was released with that SDK.

Guylain cannot have one of each camera to test, so it is up to the community to report their experiences.

In januari Nikon has released new firmware which I haven’t installed yet (just got that message).

does it work with that new version?

c 1.01

ld 2.016

If is ain't broken, don't fix it.

My advise would be to not perform the upgrade unless it really fixes an issue with your camera you can't live without.

It should work, but I can't be 100% sure until some actually does it... don't be the first one if you don't have to just to be safe.

Okay, got my D850 from Nikon today... been at it for about 1 hours and boom... it connects.

The D850 should work in the next BYN release, YEAH!

I'll post in it in the pre-release download section in the next few days after some more testing.

Hey Guylian

This is great news!

Is there a new release of BYN that I should download for the D850 functionality?

As per my message above, I will post something later this week (or the weekend) in the pre-release download section.

Doesn't work for me, can't connect. Even tried libusb-win32. qDslDashboard finds my D850 using libusb-win32 though.

Well, libusb-win32 replaces the underlying usb driver in Windows... it will never work as now you're crippled the ability for the Nikon SDK to even communicated with the camera.

I can swap them in seconds, no worries. However, what does qDslrDashboard use if not the Nikon SDK? And qDslrDashboard gets a connection immediately.

I don't know but if it requires libusb then they have hard-wired their communication and they are not using standard protocols.

I managed to get a connection eventually. For anyone else having trouble connecting their Nikon camera to BYN, here's what I did:

  1. Plug the camera in
  2. Locate the camera in device manager
  3. If it is not registered as 'Portable Device', uninstall device and check the box for removing the driver, press OK
  4. Unplug the camera
  5. Go to 1.)

You will now be able to connect to your Nikon from within BYN.

QUESTION:  The D850 connects using the 10-pin connector and ShoestringAstronomy DSUSB , right? I’m getting Camera not found. Using 64-bit Windows 10.

No, you only need the camera provided USB cable with the D850.  No other cable is necessary for this model.
