What kind of auto focuser can be controlled by BackyardEOS ascom focus feature?

Any focuser with an ASCOM-compliant driver. It may need to be an absolute focuser (stepper motor) rather than a relative (servo-driven) focuser, but I am not sure about that.

Please provide a link to the focuser your are speaking of.  This way we can verify if it has an ASCOM driver.

It would help if you could provide more info about the focuser that you are interested in.

I can only see one Orion focuser on their web site...Orion AccuFocus Electronic Focuser. There is no indication that this focuser has an ASCOM driver and no obvious way to connect this focuser to a computer.

There are several focuser drivers that are linked to or can be downloaded from the ASCOM web site. I have used MoonLite focusers for several years. They are reliable and repeatable. Another focuser manufacturer with a good reputation is Optec.
