What stacking sofware is being used for Deep Sky Imaging?

mikepaling

Question

Hi folks ...

Now that I have got used to the basic operation of BYE I now want to get into some serious attempts at Deep Sky imaging when the weather allows!

Can I ask what sort of software is being used to stack sets of Deep Sky image files??? ... I currently have Registax 6 ... but I "think" that this is only used for stacking AVI video files.

Any help and suggestions will much appreciated.

Regards

Mike

Registax6 and Autostakkert2 are both intended for Alignment and Stacking of Planetary and Lunar and Solar Imaging.  Neither of these Apps works by aligning Stars, rather work off of Surface Elements.

DSO Image Stacking is more the realm of DSS (Deep Sky Stacker - Freeware) or (PixInsight - paid) or (ImagesPlus - paid) or (MaximDL - paid).

Registax is sometime mentioned with regard to DSOs - but only for it's Wavelets Sharpening feature.

So, I assume that you are interested in stacking planetary JPG images or BYE videos which are made of individual JPGs that are assembled into an AVI file.

Just because RegiStax has not been updated in a while does not mean that it does not do a good job. Have you tried it? You really have nothing to lose.

Over the past several years "AutoStakkert!" (Author is Belgian) has supplanted RegiStax as the preferred Planetary/Lunar Video Stacking Software.

First there was AutoStakkert!2, and then AutoStakkert!3 came out with 64-bit Windows support.  (But now the Author has taken a hiatus from Dev/Support since 2017.)

There are also peripheral programs such as PIPP and WinJUPOS, performing Cropping and Derotation chores for the Stacking Program.
