Freeze on download

maximus

Question

Hey, all.

Running the latest version of BYEOS with my 550D. All connects well, but on download BYEOS freezes, resulting in the closure of the program. I know the log files are useful, so I'll post up the log files from the hours of messing around today. Tried changing cables, disabled all the settings that allow the computer to turn off USB ports, com ports and devices in both the device manager and advanced power save settings. The disk sleep settings have been changed along with the Norton AV settings. I'm at a loss, and given that it's clear and is the first time in like months, I'd like to get out there.

I hope these log files are of some use and i hope we can find a resolution to the problem.

Many thanks

UPDATE - I noticed that in the logs "1499 not responding" relates to the 3rd party port settings, so I went into the settings and disabled them. The advanced settings are set to maximum stability. 60 sec sub okay! waiting for a 200 sec sub ----- 200 secs OKAY!!!!! Gonna open all the other software and try again.

If you still have an issue with downloading your images and want to submit log files from BYE 3.1.14, please follow these instructions:

Given that it appears to work when you shut down other apps, it seems most likely that the issue is due to USB saturation. How are all the devices cabled?

Other ssues with download errors are most often due to:

broken camera (try with a different camera)
Windows has incorrect folder security (install BYE to a different folder)
Anti-virus software is preventing the download (temporarily disable A/V software)
USB overloaded (plug the camera into a USB port on the other side of the computer or try a more powerful computer)

Thanks, astroman133... I am afraid I don't have another camera or computer. Been using this one for ages now. Sometimes BYEOS is okay sometimes it's not. AV is fine and so is the security. I'll follow the procedure you posted as required. And JFYI all the other software works fine, I think the PC is powerful enough for the application. It is a bit old though lol.

I had thought that you indicated that BYE was able to download images as expected when used by itself, but not able to when other apps are running. Is one of them PHD, by chance?

Yes, PHD 2.6.3 dev 8, along with Stellarium Scope, Stellarium and EQMOD. BYEOS seems to be really intermittent. Something is tripping it up, I just can't seem to find the source. TBH, It could very well be the hardware but I don't have another camera for comparison.

Please don't post all your log files on the forum in the future; space costs money.  I only need the one log file where the error is occurring.

Your issue is USB cable data saturation.  Plug your camera in a separate USB port on the computer and see if this makes a difference.  Also does it freeze if you are not using PHD and other softwares at the same time?  If it does not this should confirm the USB saturation theory.

The Canon SDK is very, very sensitive to any power and/or data transfer variation, even if it is only for a millisecond.

Okay, thanks. I always give the camera its own port and EQMOD its own port for reliability reasons. PHD runs through the USB port on the opposing side of the computer. I'll have a think about the routing configuration. None of the other software have any issues at all.

Please download 3.1.14 and try again. Send those log files if you still get the error.

Okay, I'll give it a whirl.

I figured these problems were a good excuse for an upgrade :) ....So, I bought a Canon Rebel T6i...;) When that arrives I'll see if I get the same issues.

If the new camera has a larger sensor this will cause an increased download time. I would not expect this to solve your issue, since the issue appears to be the Canon SDK.

A better solution may have been to buy a more powerful laptop to control your astro gear.

I have a quad core i7 with 1TB SSD. When I image I run all my astro gear (telescope, focuser, ambient temperature sensor, guide camera, imaging camera) through a single hub. From a software standpoint I run BYE for my DSLR or a CCD camera control program of my own creation for my astro CCD cameras, along with Sky Tools 3, PHD2, Astro Tortilla, and a telescope and focuser control program that I also wrote. I rarely have communications issues. I'm just sayin'.

That's a fair point and is also on the list.

I see you have a few advance settings configured.  Go to Settings -> Advanced Settings and reset to default; then restart BYE and try again.  Try without any other astro software running, just BYE.

Regards,

Will do.
