bug reports

Question

I have a few problems. Currently I use last version (3.1.9), but problems have appeared early.

1. If I click on the thumbnail bar to look on a different pictures too often, after some time (minutes, tens on minutes) Backyard just stop show the pictures. Solution - close application and open it. This is an old problem.  Sometime it start to work after shooting, sometimes not.

2. Very inconvenient bug. It appear about half of year ago. Time to time Backyard  does not catch last preview picture, recently downloaded from camera. It simply has not appeared in thumbnail bar. At all. But I could find a file on a disk. Currently I "lost" 1 picture from 4-5. Sometime a sequence. Solution - just make a new preview. And again. And again. :( Very inconvenient when you should do something fast.

3. I have no idea how, but when Backyard started, I have some problems with wireless communication (I use laptop): website opens slowly, ping very unstable. As soon as I close Backyard - I have fast internet and no problems with ping and etc. Can`t understand how it possible...

#4 No, still inside program files but select another folder beside the default "BackyardEOSv3.1", perhaps "BYEv3.1".  This will cause the settings to be reset to default values and stored in a separate folder in Windows as well and this should fix the issue.

#5 There is no such thing as won't fix.  Everything has a priority as severity level.  The order on which things does get fix is based on these 2 parameters and then some... such as my time.  BYE and BYN is a weeknight/weekend gig for me.  Low priority/severity bugs can take some time to be addressed... but nothing is ever out for good.

#4 Ok, I uninstalled it completely, delete all "tails" on the disk and installed it into a new folder different from default. Currently program does not lose settings after restart. Let`s see how it will be later..

#5 Ok. Its not critical, just slightly irritating blinking.

"No such things as wont`t fix"... Many people will be completely disagree with you :) e.g.: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Bug statuses From other side, in case its your hobby where you would like to achieve a perfection, why not? :) But then we got a conflict with "its a .Net issue" and "out of my control" ;)

OK, well done. Let you know when find something new about #3 and #4.

Here I`m again... Unfortunately, we have a new problem with preview shooting. Last behavior was the following: preview shooting did not change zooming. Current behavior: after preview shot zoom goes back to 100% and I have zoom in again. Very inconvenient when you focusing with Bahtinov`s mask or comparing quality of images. :(

That is already fixed in 3.1.11.  I saw this too just after I released 3.1.10.

Regards,

Hm... Perfect! :))

And what about this: quite strange behavior in Planetary mode. Look on frames count on the video.  This is the second recording, first one was with the same parameters:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/huncgc2nfty0upq/BYE_planetary_bug.avi?dl=0

Looks like file is OK. Probably just a counter problem.

Strange... There was no problems with video by camtasia before...

OK, the counter was very unsteady. It bounced forward and backward. e.g. 815 - 806 - 819 - 811 etc.

2000 frames, JPG and AVI. Nothing, except too often picture freezing like there was a delay with getting of the next frame. Sometimes really big delay... USB web camera were used with finder in the same time, but its usual situation. I switched off finder and re-connected 700D camera. After that counter works as usual.

To be honest, I do not like video too. Because there are freezing on the recorded video too. I`ll investigate video and JPG files tomorrow deeply with fresh head.

The settings are new. Before I never recorded JPG and AVI together. Continue testing tomorrow...

Hi!

First of all, #4 is OK - BYE does not lose settings anymore.

And second, about last report. New video is here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/sjbjz3jal1iv2h1/Liveview_problem.avi?dl=0

Its in a good quality, probably you need to download it.

Looks like live view based functions work worse - planetary and drift definitely. After some time counter start freezing for a few seconds and proceed counting. Longer record - more often freezing, freezing itself is longer. Main picture freeze too in the same moment. After some time main pictures has been frozen completely, while counter works with interruption. At that moment I made video. With previous version I made drift longer then 1 hour many times (it was PEC investigation). I do not remember that I  have a problem. With a new version - ~30 minutes and its finished. I made 2 attempts. CPU loading and mem usage is OK.

2 days  ago something similar was in planetary mode. More strange was counter behavior described above. But I can`t repeat it.

All Canon DSLRs have integrated Thermal Sensor which can cause the Camera to Shutdown from LiveView or Video Record modes.  Some Models also have a hard 30min Time Limit on Video Recording for the same purpose - to protect the DSLR Sensor and Electronics from Thermal Damage.

Perhaps this is what is biting you.  Try operating your DSLR in LiveView Mode for a similar Long Duration without connecting it to BYE.  What happens??

If you stay in live view more than 15 to 20 minutes the camera will shutdown leading to you to think the software has frozen.  Remember that a DSLR is not meant to have live view on all the time, it's a camera design for day time photography and we are using it for something is was not design to do.  ! hours drift... you are now using the camera beyond it's designed capabilitites by staying in live view for that long.

1) Yes, this is a known bug.  I just didn't get it fix yet.  This is a message/event issue in code.

2) I would need the log file when this occurred.  There might be an error message in there.

3) Is your BackyardTEMP folder on a remote driver?

1. It would be nice to do something... Its strange  that in Thumbnail bar I see "Loading" status, but no result.

2. Logs attached. ThemperHum was connected today only, so it has nothing with this bug. What I can add is that it looks like in the situation when BackyardEOS losts images the shoot sounds plays slightly early then usual.

3. Default place, system Drive C:

And a couple of bugs more:

4. Very often, almost all times Backyard lost settings. First of all - download path. I have to set it almost each time.

5. The сountdown. If you specify mirror delay (usually I use 2 sec) the count down calculates with mistake of this 2 sec.

Problems 1 and 2 torture me every night..

Thanks!

Probably, you are right. Its beyond designed limits. And yesterday it works properly, probably because it was colder.

But, video and counter freezing and counter bouncing I guess have nothing with camera switching off by thermal sensor or long usage. Let you know if I got new info.

Some thought about 1 and 2.

1. In case its difficult to fix it, may be at least to find workaround? e.g., the problem would be less irritated if we can get access to picture after restart of the software.

2. Same, whats about workaround? e.g. "RESCAN" item in thumbnail context menu. On this item Backyard rescan download folder, take all files and add it all to thumbnail again.

Hm.. Did n`t know about that. I`ll try. Thank you!

But in case Backyard lost images and it does not appear in thumbnail bar - this function does not help. Moreover, after application restart thumbnail bar is empty. :( So, point 2) really critical. It seems to me that re-scan function for thumbneil will be usefull.

Did you find something suspicious in the log file?

I have not been able to re-create the issues that you are reporting.

Issue 1) BYE stops showing thumbnail images

This never fails for me!

Issue 2) From time to time BYE does not catch the last preview picture...Solution - just make a new preview

The Preview function is used to display old images when not connected to a camera. You obviously mean something different. Please explain.

Issue 3) BYE causes internet connection to slow down.

This does not happen to me.

Are all these issues possibly related to your anti-virus software? Do they still occur if the AV software is temporarily disabled?

#2 Please, read my first post carefully. I mean preview shooting function.

#3 Anti-Virus software is absent. At all. And there are no viruses, tested recently by cureit.

Another thought about #2: may be it`s also related to the mirror delay problem #5 (not only countdown problem)? I`ll try to test it with long delay in 5-15 sec.

I actually read your posts several times to try to understand what is causing your issues. I am still confused.

What do you mean by "preview shooting function"? The only time that thumbnails are displayed is during imaging or when old images are previewed when dropped onto the BYE window. So I don't understand when you refer to "preview picture, recently downloaded from camera".

Ok. Again about #2.

Attached you can see screen shot with marks - 1, 2, 3.

Time to time (Backyard was updated first time in the end of January, later - as soon as new versions coming) after pressing Preview button (mark 1) I see that shot is done, I heard shooting sound, I can find a file in downloading folder, but the picture does not appears in the thumbnail bar (mark 2) and on the on the viewport (mark 3). At all. It happens time to time. Sometimes - as a sequence and simply cant get a picture in 3-4 shots, sometimes just once and with the next preview command I get a picture.

2 Admin: I found out how it works with Drag&Drop from folder. Yes, it helps here too. If It does not appears automatically, I`ll just drop it from download folder manually.  Thank! But it would be nice to fix it.

Ok, and now... Tra-ta-ta-taaa...  You can see an enthralling sight with #1, #2 and #5 bugs are reproduced all together!

https://www.dropbox.com/s/heg31tekuuez1g4/Backyard bugs.avi?dl=0

Be patient, its more then 5 minutes (and its my third attempt! :( )

The most interesting show you can find after 2:30 - 3:00. Before there are a single fails. But after... The loading from thumbnail bar function stops working completely. In the same time  Backyard starts to lose new picture.

Please, notice that:

1. Time to time rotate function does not work too.

2. Sometimes when picture loading fails, histograms updates!

3. Loading of the new pictures by Preview shot was broke in the same time, probably #1 and #2 caused by the same problem.

4. All function repaired by resizing main window. But in other attempt it does not help, my be just occasion.

2admin: is it a WPF?

The last 1-2 months I have this problems every night. Unfortunately for me, but fortunately for Backyard, there were not so many good nights and most of them I spent with PEC calibration, RC collimation, guiding setting and Moon shooting with Planetary function. The white night is coming, but I can`t imagine how to work with it in August, during usual nights shooting deep sky`s and changing target every 1-3 hours.

Log file is attached. A lot of error inside.

The problem with mirror lock that was shown in your video above was reported and confirmed several months ago. I do not use mirror lock, so for me it is not a problem.

I saw a different issue with drag and drop of old images into BYE. I selected several images from a folder and dropped them into BYE. They all show thumbnails, but several of the thumbnails do not display when clicked on. There are several errors in the log file similar to the following:

2017-04-25 13:56:45,434 [Main] ERROR - CaptureMode.<ImageProcessDisplayOnMessageRecieved>b__0
2017-04-25 13:56:45,436 [Main] ERROR - Out of memory.
