I have the same problem, I connected my Canon 80D turned it on and clicked connect it still says disconnected.  I made sure the camera was in M.  I turned it on and off 3 times restarted the program 4 times still the same.

Wouldn't be bad but I drove an hour to a dark site and spent an hour setting up.

I will try it inside with a lens on the camera as I was using a 1 1/4 nose

The problem that the original poster had was that BYE does not automatically connect to the camera. You must click on the big Connect button at the upper left.

Your problem seems different because you said that you "clicked connect", but BYE did not connect to the camera. There are typically 2 reasons for this...

1) The USB cable is faulty or not connected.
2) Windows is not able to find a kernel-level driver for the camera. This driver should be built into the operating system for Windows 7 and later.

If you connect the USB cable between the PC and the camera and turn the camera on, but do not see the camera listed in the Windows Device Manager after a couple of seconds, then there is no way that BYE will be able to connect. Windows has to "see" the camera first.

In addition, with newer cameras you must disable the WiFi connectivity in the camera's menus.in order to connect via USB.

As you discovered, it is also good to test this before the long drive to a dark site.

Please start a new thread in the future, replying to an old thread assuming you have the same issue is not effective... and since you have pressed the Connect button at least once your issue is not the same as the one reported by the OP.

If your camera does not connect it is a usb cable issue, I'm pretty sure about that.  The 80D has been supported for a while now.

You did not mention it... but was the USB cable properly connected/seated?

Do you have EOS Utility installed?  If yes make sure it did not automatically connect to the camera because only one software can connected to the camera at a time.

Regards,
