Dark Frame difficulties

cmjrff

Question

Hello,

I'm having trouble with Dark Frames for some reason.  I took a series of dark frames but they are showing up as an over exposed frame. Almost like a flat frame in appearance.  When I try to use Deep Sky Stacker wtih Darks and Light frames, I end up with about a 1/3 size image showing up in the DSS preview window in only the middle third of the panel.  Thank you for any suggestions.  I am new to Backyardeos, and to my dslr, which is a Canon T3i.

Charles

Charles,

How are you shooting those dark frames? You need to prevent light from getting to the camera sensor because the shutter is open for dark frames just like it is for light frames.

Sorry, but I have never seen DSS, but if the dark frames are saturated (white) then the results from using them will be unexpected.

I had a chance to try making more darks last night.  I used a lens cap placed over the coma corrector that I left on the camera.  I would say that it is not keeping the light out and hopefully that is my problem.  I will try it again tonight using the camera cap and see if that does the trick.  I tried stacking a lot of light frames with the darks I made last night and all I got was a blown out light image.  No stars or anything.  This was with Deep Sky Stacker.  I think I'm just making darks that aren't dark.  Does it sound like I am on the right track?  Thank you to everyone who is helping with this.

Hmmm.  I just tried changing a setting Deep Sky and I think that has made all the difference.  I'm going to assume that my troubles are related to my learning curve with the software I'm using.  A few other things going on in terms of the new camera and larger RAW images (I think) so we'll see how it goes.  Thank you to all who contributed.  If I figure out exactly what was causing the strange results, I'll post a follow-up.

What setting in DSS made a difference?
