Yes, a Windows 10 upgrade will cause your key to be validated again.  This is because the licensing system detected a major change and needs to ensure your are the rightful owner.

Your id is your username here on the website, it is "WILSOLR47" and it is case sensitive.

Your key is stored in your client area here as well, click the "My Purchases" tab in the upper right corner.

John,

In the future, please start a new thread for a new issue. That makes it easier for someone else with the same issue as you to find it and apply the same solution.

This thread was about folks who already had BYE installed, but a Windows 10 update caused them to have to re-validate their license. it seems like your post is for a different issue.

I have received 3 or 4 complaints about this recently :(

Unfortunately this one is not an easy fix :(

I'm scratching my head trying to figure out a way to resolve this and aside from actually removing the validation I'm not sure what can be done.

I may be able to give a grace period, say 14 days to force the validation.  That may be my only option... but I'm not even sure I can do it yet.

Thanks for the heads up everyone... the last thing I ever want to do is prevent a legitimate user from using his/her paid software.

Regards,

Thanks for all your help with this and sorry I didn't get back to this topic sooner. I was able to get it to work finally after realizing the identifier was in capital letters and it wasn't accepting mine since I was entering it like I do on the web using lowercase letters. That about drove me to drink!

Buy maybe there is a bigger issue here. This did not happen after a Windows 10 upgrade. This happened after a minor Windows Update that they put out usually on Tues Night or Wed morning. I used the software without any issues the night before and then the next night when I went to image, it asked for the identifier. So even these minor software updates that Microsoft does frequently can cause the issue.

Hope that doesn't cause you any deeper worries Guylain and thanks for this amazing and still wonderful software!

I know exactly which windows parameters it checks and I also which one is causing this... but since this is about security I won't say here in the forum.

This is a major issue for me.  Anything that prevents a legitimate users from using his/her paid software is so I need to do something; I'm just not sure what and how yet.

I'll keep everyone informed.

I'm not really familiar with the inner workings of Windows, but is it possible to build up, say a hardware profile of the PC (which is less likely to change) as well as detecting an update/upgrade?  If the hardware (specifically the CPU) doesn't change, but an update is detected, display a warning message and allow a grace period:

WARNING: BackyardEOS has detected a significant update to Windows. Please re-validate your license within nn days.

This would allow someone in the field to continue to use BYE until such time as they're able to get internet access for validation.

It's more complicated than that.

Recent Windows 10 upgrade/update was a complete OS replacement, it actually replaced the Windows folder itself.  This was major and enough to trigger *this*is*a*different*computer* signature (or fingerprint as it is being called).

This needs a bit of digging to address in code.

Thanks everyone.  I will find way... but it may take a little while :(

All

a solution in the meantime is before leaving for a trip to the dark site.

plug in the camera and startup BYE.  if there is a error it can be resolved at that time instead of at the dark sight with no internet signal.

just make it a habit as a pre check of equipment.

I had some friends whose PCs were upgraded while at a star party that provided internet access. This caused them to have re-validate their BYE licenses during the star party. For this reason it is also a good idea to store your O'Telescope username and password on your laptop, especially if you don't visit this site very often. You can put your credentials in a text file or in a password storage app. I use Password Safe.
