New DSUSB Options for D5100

ChrisMoses

Question

Hi,

My DSUSB-IR1 for my D5100 seems to have died. SO I have two questions:

1. In the compatability chart, it does not list IR for the D5100.  Do I not need the IR option for it? That would be nice.

2. Assuming I do need the IR option, are there any alternatives to Shoestring Astronomy?  I've always liked them, just seeing if there are other options.

If anyone has any insight I would be very appreciative.

Thanks,

Chris

I believe that both the wired and the IR DSUSB connections will work with BYE/BYN, so that it does not know the difference.

However, even the Shoestring web site does not recommend the IR version. It may be difficult to keep it aimed correctly with the mount slewing around the sky.

The difference between the IR and non-IR cable is handled in the DSUSB box itself.  There is no difference for BYE/BYN, it should be transparent.

As Rick said, I would not get the IR version unless this is the only thing the camera supports like the older D40 for instance.

Regards,
