Trouble with capture, suddenly.

Joe_Roofer

Question

I'm using version 3.2.2 with a canon 90D. Last time out I was shooting fine, changed targets and suddenly I get what sounds like a double trumpet sound when I hit "start capture" And nothing happens, no pics. I've been using this software for years and it's been great. I'm no expert, maybe someone can tell me what the two alert sounds mean.

First, thank you for providing the model of your camera and the full BYE version number in your post. Most people don't do that. I doubt that it will affect your issue, but there is a new release version 3.2.3 and a pre-release version 3.5.0..RC7. There is no cost to upgrade to them and you can continue to use your existing license key.

I get the same type of sound if I try to start a Capture Plan when the camera is in Auto or Program, or Tv shooting modes.

What do you see in the Log History Summary at the top left portion of the BYE window? I see text that says "Make sure camera is set to MANUAL, turn the dial to 'M'."

Because the shooting mode is a physical rotary knob you need to set the shooting mode. Only on some of the newest models can BYE change the shooting mode electronically.

If the shooting mode is not your issue, it could be some other camera setting that is interfering with BYE. Some models have a setting that prevents them from taking a picture when no lens is attached to the camera. Since the camera does not recognize a telescope as a lens this can also prevent BYE from shooting images. However, I would not expect this setting to change on-the-fly unless you changed it.

I hope this helps.

The camera is definitely connected and set to bulb mode, and has alsway worked that way for 3 years. I'll try the upgrade and thanks for the help

The trumpet sound (or mosquito sound as I call it) is only played when the camera in unable to connect. It is odd that it would sound as you start a sequence capture.

Send me the log file.

I'm familiar with the mosquito sound, it's not  that. I sent the log files from that night, Thanks!!!

You have selected a serial cable DSUSB for BULB captures. Do you have a DSUSB cable? This is not needed for the D90 as it is capable of BULB over USB. Change your cable selection from DSUSB back to Camera USB cable.

Regards,

Thank you, as far as I know I am using a regular USB cable, so would this be somewhere in my settings? I was shooting fine when this popped up, without changing cables. But you've given me something to work with... I'll let you know how it works out. I appreciate the help.

Please...the next time you post about a problem with BYE and/or your Canon camera please post it to the BackyardEOS Forum, rather than the General Forum. That will make it easier for other Canon and BYE owners to search for symptoms that they are seeing and find your issue documented.

OK, I've not used the forum much as I never had a problem before, but I'll keep that in mind.

It's in the capture plan, select "Camera USB" from the cable support pull down.
