Assuming that you were shooting a relatively dim DSO, you will need to perform a substantial Stretch process (eg: Levels/Curves in PS) before there is much to see in any "Linear"DSO Exposure.

 

Remember:  JPG Images are heavily processed within the Camera before they are written to File.  Raw NEF files are themselves NOT actually viewable until they too are Processed (often by Adobe Camera Raw) - even the Thumbnail Display in Windows / OSX is the result of running the Data through a default "Develop" process with a Codec specific to the NEF format.  The TIFF output is simply a faithful "Linear" conversion of that NEF data.
