Dither During In-Camera Dark Frame Subtraction?

tcardin770

Question

Hello,

I tried dithering last night for the first time with Phd2 and BackyardEOS and also plate solving with Astrotortilla.  It all worked great with my little SmartEq Pro.  One question I have though concerns the timing of the dithering routine.  I like to do in-camera dark frame subtraction sometimes.  I was hoping that the dithering could be configured to start while the camera was taking the dark frame to save time.  Instead, it waits until the dark frame is done to perform the dithering which adds additional time in between exposures.

Is it possible to do this with Backyard EOS or possibly a future enhancement?

Thanks,

Tim

Hi Tim,

Good suggestion.  Unfortunately this is not possible at the moment.  Imaging and dithering are sequential :(

You should probably head on over to the Feature Suggestion Box forum and post it there.  This is where I go when I have a few minutes to spare and don't know what to code next :)

Regards,

It's been discussed on other Forums that the Canon SDK did not advise Completion of the Bulb Exposure until the In-Camera Dark Exposure was also completed - making it rather difficult for Guylain to take any advantage of the timing.

Most of us prefer to perform our own Darks and Dark Subtraction during the Calibration / Stacking Process.  This allows us a few advantages:

  • Darks are not performed during Prime AP Imaging Time - wasting potential Exposure Time and allowing Seeing Conditions to Change more between Frames
  • In-Camera Darks Exposure Time adds to the Heat Accumulation in the Sensor same as (or potentially a little more) than the Light Exposure
  • Separate Calibration allows User to better Control the Process and Parameters, as well as to deselect any Darks with substantial Light Leaks or Hot Pixels or Gamma Ray Strikes
  • Allows one to utilize Master Darks or to utilize a set of 20 Darks on a sequence of 40+ Lights for additional Time Savings
