Question

Hello,

So I was all excited to finally log some hours with half decent weather tonight. I bought this program around one month ago... I played around with it one time when I first got it but it was too cold to spend more than a few minutes outside! So tonight i plug USB cord in to laptop and camera (which is attached prime to my scope), and when I hit "connect" in BYE, I hear a strange noise before getting an error message listing possibilities. none seemed to fit so I unplug cord from computer and plug it back in, try again... Same thing. This time I figure I will turn camera on and off.. Only nothing on my camera is responding!!! I am using the canon 60Da. I turn camera off, yet info is still displayed on the top display. I pop battery out and back in, and I can't even get it on. I tried a different battery and different memory cards, and nothing!! Any insight/advice would be hugely appreciated. Trying not to lose my marbles here!!!

First, some good news. You do not need to wait until you have a dark sky to familiarize yourself with the operation of BYE. BYE works just as well with a lens in place so you can stay warm and play with most of the features on a rainy/snowy Saturday.

Now, if your 60Da is not turning off or turning on while disconnected from the PC then it is most likely a problem with the camera. How old is your 60Da?  A few years ago there was a problem with 60D's and 60Das that just stopped working (died suddenly). It was not related to BYE or to being tethered to a PC.  At the time Canon repaired them at no cost to the owner, even if they were out of warranty.  It has been a few months since I heard about a failure like this, but I believe the owner reported that Canon wanted $$ to repair the camera.  Good Luck!  One thing that I could suggest is to turn the camera off, remove the battery and leave the camera set with no battery for a couple of hours.  Then try some tests with the camera not connected if it appears to be working, then I would try connecting it to your PC and using BYE.

Good luck!

The 60D(a) is plagued with camera power issues; with and without software.  These issues go back to 2011 and 2010 in some case.

This joint announcement was release over 1 year ago.

There is no pattern aside from a general 60D(a) issue with or without computer assisted shooting.

No other model shows wide spread power failures of that magnitude worldwide.  It's sad actually :(
