Byn Focus

ABPiecka

Question

I was watching your presentation on BYE and noticed the focus option using a Canon lens.  I do not see this function on the BYN...Does Nikon not support this function or am I missing something in the setup

Thanks

Thanks for the response...I didn't mention in the original note, excellent presentation and it helped greatly even for BYN.  Thanks for the time and effort.

I am looking forward to the release of the licensed final version.

Thanks again

Ah, you mean manual focus of a camera lens from within BYN.  BYE and BYN Premium versions do support driving an ASCOM-connected focuser.

Apparently the Nikon Software Development Kit (SDK) is not as mature as the Canon SDK. At the time that BYN was initially released it was not obvious to the developers (Guylain and Chris) how to drive the focus ring on a connected lens or whether that functionality was even provided.  As a result they deferred the implementation of that functionality.  It has been said in other BYN threads that this functionality is currently under development.

Several others in the community have already expressed their desire to see this functionality implemented in BYN, so I am not sure what more you could do.

It would seem focusing would be at the top of the feature list, perhaps even mandatory for imaging software.

What can the community do to help this feature?

Actually this is not the case, most of us doing imaging uses a telescope, not a lens.  For telescopes you can use the ASCOM component in both BYE and BYN premium edition.

Not to say that driving a lens is not important, but it is not a must have when less than 5% uses lens over a telescope.

I will get to it eventually.  Time is my enemy.

Just to be clear, ASCOM focusing is not an alternative solution to lens focusing.

ASCOM focusing will control the telescopes's focuser, not the focus ring on a camera lens. Neither will lens focusing, when finally supported, control the telescope's focuser.

These capabilities are for two different equipment configurations, so lens focusing, when implemented, will NOT control the telescope focuser.  Additionally, the telescope focuser control will NOT control an attached camera lens.
