Backyardeos 3.1.2 And Canon 7Dii Keeps Crashing

psychobilly

Question

So far my first 3 attempts at running sequences with ByEOS 3.1.2 with the 7DII hav all ended with it crashing - well hanging around 8-9 subs into the sequence... it eventually comes back after several minutes the sequence doesn't continue

Is there any logfile that I can look at to try and find out whats going on?

The same thing happens on my I7 desktop running Windows 7 x64 ultimate or my Tablet running Windows 8.1 x32...

Peter...

I haven't seen this yet with my 7D2. I ran a couple of 50 shot plans last night and I made sure all of them were there. I'll keep an eye out and if I see it I'll post up. Sounds like a firmware issue on the camera. Something not getting done within the window allowed for it to happen. Funny though since you aren't really stressing the thing like you would doing burst shots. The latest version is stable on my comp. I had a few crashes with the last version but I think it had to do with only having 4gig of main memory. S3Igel here is a link to the first one I shot with my 7D2.  http://www.astrobin.com/146853/B/

Check your AntiVirus App...  That's been about the only reason why anyone has found themselves unable to Paste into these Forum Threads...

But for anyone seeking psmithuk's Flickr albums:

Have you changed anything else about the BYE / Camera interface ??

Such as changing the Storage to In-Camera Only (since the HP Stream is rather tight on Storage) ??

Or changed the SD Card ??  Re-formatted it ??

No Updates to the 7DmkII Firmware yet, I suppose ??

Maybe just a Battery-Pull resulted in Clearing Digic5 Buffer Memory that actually was causing the 7DmkII to "stumble"...

Hopefully, all Frustrations (whatever the cause) are permanently Behind You!!

(Even though a 7DmkII isn't in my immediate Budget, I'd dearly love to know that it is a Flawless BYE-powered DSO Imager!!)

Cant think of anything different...  It had another busy "birding"  weekend with a couple of thousand shots again....

The stream managed just over three hours at -2C Screen on most of the time , Wi-Fi off... Wireless keyboard in use... in that time it completed a 60 sub plan and  60 subs into an 80 shot plan before the stream shutdown  Plenty for what I bought it for and when shooting at f2.8...

We only seem to get clear skies around full moon at the moment and the times been split between the 7D II and 5DIII most of my DSLR Astrophotography has been using a Baader BCF modified 1000d aiming for 8 hours+ integration time on a target..

The 7DII's and 5DIII are primarily used for terrestrial photography but I have been exploring there use for widefield Astro and "debugging" an ultra portable controller setup once tahts sorted I will add the Astrotrac into the equation  -  I have no plans to mod either of them.......  max integration time with either of them  is around 60 mins of Unguided subs at the moment :(

Hi Peter,

Thank you for the log files.

Okay, BYE does not crash, it fails gracefully after the camera failed to provide the image to download after a picture was taken.

2015-01-27 17:31:17,055 [CameraTakePictureOnMessageRecieved] ERROR - Image download timeout, process terminated after 239 seconds

This error is thrown when the camera is set to download images to the computer... BYE waits for the image... but it never comes... and it terminates the imaging session after about 2 minutes.

I do not know why your camera is no providing the image... but I get this error from different users about once a year and there is not much I can do because the camera is simply not firing the event.

The only option, and I'm not sure it would work, would be for BYE catch the error and continue with the image plan... but that image is lost because the camera did not provide one... unless you have it set to PC+Camera. In which case your image is in your camera card as well.

Regards,

Is there anything unusual with your connection between the 7DmkII and PC or Tablet??

The 7DmkII is one of the first Canon DSLRs with USB3 (instead of USB2).

Are you using the Canon-supplied USB3 Cable??  Or something longer??

Are you using USB3 Ports on your Desktop??  Tablet??  Or USB2 Ports (counting on the backward-compatibility)??

A Timeout could be a USB Communication issue that doesn't get to the level of an actual Disconnect...

I am using the canon supplied USB3.0 cable and USB3.0 ports on the Desktop running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate. I had the same problem with the 7DII with the supplied cable and a the USB port via an OTG hub on the HP Stream 7 tablet running Windows 8.1 which runs in USB2.0 mode.

I always use PC+Card to have "backup" files. I usually leave a pause of 15s between subs to make sure the camera has time to complete any "processing" . All in camera NR is turned off so no auto darks (Long exp NR) being performed etc...

Carrying on the existing plan would be my preferred option as the camera would be left unattended...

Once I restarted the plan it seemed to run fine...

It could be... this is a random error when the camera won't fire the image ready to download event.

You could go for 1000 images with no issues then boom, once very 10 to 12 images again... and the cycle begins again :(

Yeah just one of those things ....

It Would be great if the plan could continue after the timeout...

Really pleased with he performance on the HP Stream 7... Should be ideal for those cliff or mountain top sessions where having minimal kit to carry makes life easier :)

I'll see what I can do for sure, that should be easy to do... but with some camera that will not be possible because the camera is left in a busy state... it doesn't seem to be an issue with the 7D Mk II however.

If you don't wait for the timeout the camera is left in a busy state and switching off doesn't work your left with the writing images message on the screen of the camera  and need to remove the battery to get around it...

Peter...

Yeah, that is what I thought :(

Not much I can do then :(
