Saving Files Option

Datapanic

Question

I have been using BYE for a while now and have been taking time lapse images - about 1000 or so per session.  I try to set a delay of 1 second between each frame, but it ends up varying around 2 to 3 seconds because each frame is saved to the camera card AND the computer.

Is there any way to set it so that it only saves the image to the camera card?  Looks like the options are to save it to the computer or save it to the computer and the camera card - no option to save it just to the camera card.  I would like to save just to the camera card because that would make the delay between each frame more uniform because each image would not need to be transferred to the laptop over USB and the laptop battery would last longer as the hard drive wouldn't be busy writing 1000 or more files to disk.

Feature request?

Actually the option to save to camera only is there, click the pulldown in the session plan center.

I will move this thread in the BackyardEOS forum.

Doesn't the "Save to Camera" setting also have to perform the Image Download (even if not saving to PC) in order to evaluate the Histogram and the EXIF data ??

If save to camera only is selected images are not downloaded, not displayed, no histogram displayed, etc...

In this case BYE is only used for the automated capture plan.

I just tested the Capture to PC setting (60D connected to BYE 3.1.0 RC5), and although I had a nearly empty SD Card in the Camera, it reports:

This has nothing to do with the card being full of empty.

Some models do not allow saving to card only when connected to a camera.  I'm not sure if the 60D is one of them.  Can you save to card only with EOS Utility and your 60D?  If yes it's a bug in BYE, if no the 60D does allow saving to card only.

Keep me posted on the results.

I tested Save to Camera with BYE v3.0.3 Premium...

It DOES Save to Camera, BUT fires the Shutter for only every Odd-numbered Exposure !!

I did a set of 10@2.5s and a set of 4@10s, and got a total of 6 CR2 files on the SD Card (per Playback button and per Shutter Clicks).

Odd, all files should be there <_>

I'll run a few tests with my 60D too.

Yes, EOS Utility DOES Capture to the SD Card successfully, although it actually only offers "Card and Computer" and "Computer".

I was able to snap successive Frames using EOSUtil (although I had to wait the short 1-1.5sec for the previous CR2 file to Download.

I just tested the same Save to Camera setting, using my T2i...

BYE v3.0.3 Premium - SUCCESS

BYE v3.1.0 RC5 - SUCCESS

Log files attached:

Okay, so the 60D does not behave as it should.  Thanks, that will help to narrow it down.

I did a few more tests for Save to Camera with the 60D...

Using BYE v3.0.3 Premium:

On about half of tests, the same "Fires Shutter for only Odd-numbered Frames" occurred, but for the other half it was "Fires Shutter Every Time".

I tried to see if it was dependent on the Exposure Duration - tried 1.6",2",2.5", 10" sets of 4 shots each - but that didn't seem to effect it.

It seems like it might simply be an edge-case of Timing between when the Camera Fires the Shutter and then notifies BYE of Finished, and then BYE lists "Busy" for a short 1.5-2", and then BYE requests the next Shot...

But, I'll leave that testing to you...

Even after these Half-Successes and Successes using v3.0.3, switching back to v3.1.0 RC5 failed with the same "Unable to set SaveTo=CARD, current setting is assumed!" error...

I'm thinking adding a 2 second pause between exposures would fix it, just a guess though.
