Before running BYE (BackyardEOS), you will need to load the Canon Drivers which came with the Camera on a CD.  These usually include loading the EOSUtility Program - which can also be used as a Quick Test to ensure that the Drivers loaded successfully. (Once done with EOSUtility, ensure that it's "Run in Background" Setting=OFF, then Exit the EOSUtility Program, then Reboot.)

Now, you should have everything that you need in order to Install and Run the Latest Pre-Release version of BYE.

I just purchased BYE and a canon Ra. Connected camera to computer with hdmi mini cable and it won’t connect to BYE. Can you help.

Please start by following all of the instructions in the posts above - including making sure to use your USB Cable (HDMI is for Video Output ONLY).

The Ra is not the same as the R.

Please start a new thread and we'll go from there.  It's going to be easier to follow this way.

Regards,
