So I seem to be having an issue where BYN will take an exposure however when it finishes it times out and does not download the photo, not 100% what the issue is. It worked once ... but then suddenly stopped working once I started to increase exposure time and adjust the f/ratio etc... I am using a D5100, and a DSUSB cable.

So far so good with my D7000, been playing with all the various parts of the program today with my new cable and so far no issues. If I run across some, I will post them.

Oh, antimorris from Annie's Astro Action... welcome to the dark side :)

Hi.  I'm a total newbie.  I tried this software out the other day, at night, at the telescope.  I failed miserably, because I failed to realize ahead of time that I needed a DSUSB device.

Today, I have, right here in my hot little hand, a DSUSB device from Shoestring. ByN recognizes my D300, and the DSUSB.  So I can set the ISO, and I can do variety of things... including trying to focus, but when I set up a capture plan, just for fun, no telescope connected, ByN acts like it thinks it is doing something, but nothing is happening with the camera. It says "Cable Init", and it doesn't return any errors that I notice, and then it goes on and acts like it thinks it is imaging...  although right now, trying i again, to be sure I record properly what's happening... it is stuck in "cable Init."

I'm willing to accept that the problem is between the keyboard and the chair.  What *should* I be doing?  Is there a manual of some ind floating around?  Is this not expected t work?  What information would you want or need to help me figure out what's wrong?

I set a very simple capture plan; a few short exposures with a few seconds delay between.  For some reason the software thinks this will take just under 20 minutes to complete.

Thanks,

Karl

Are you sure you selected DSUSB and not DSUSB2 or any other COM ports in BackyardNIKON?

Make you select DSUSB.  Then try the "Test Cable" in the lower right corner.  This should activate the shutter using the selected cable.

Also, is your camera dial set to a mode where BULB is possible.

Did you try the DSUSB test software from Shoestring Astronomy to ensure the cable is working properly?

Keep us posted,

Haha, thanks. I have done occasional DSLR stuff off and on, CCD is still my primary, but I do enjoy using my D7000 for images and this will definitely make it sooooo much easier.

>> Are you sure you selected DSUSB and not DSUSB2 or any other COM ports in BackyardNIKON?  <<

Yes.  (And I do have a USB cable connected, as well.)

>> Make you select DSUSB.  Then try the "Test Cable" in the lower right corner.  This should activate the shutter using the selected cable. <<

Oh.  Interesting.  That button does nothing detectable, but since I didn't know what to expect, that was not alarming to me.

Yes.

>> Did you try the DSUSB test software from Shoestring Astronomy to ensure the cable is working properly? <<

I did not know about that until just now.  I've downloaded it, and, while the device is detected, and I can control the LED on the device, I can't make it talk to the camera.  I think I need to have a conversation with Shoe String.  (I'm pretty sure the camera itself is fine.)  I will only post again if the hardware, camera or DSUSB turns out to NOT be the problem.  Sorry to trouble you.   Thanks for the response.

First, thank you for providing this wonderful program. I can't wait to put it to good use!

I'm having an issue using BackyardNIKON with my D600. I connect it using the default camera USB cable, but when trying to capture I get the following:

23:48:18  Licensed to BETA Tester (support@binaryrivers.com)
23:48:22  Nikon drivers initialized.
23:48:29  Attempting to connect camera...
23:48:30  D600 CONNECTED!

23:48:43  Imaging session cancelled
23:48:49  Camera SHUTDOWN!
23:48:55  IMAGE_20140912-23h48m52s181ms.JPG

The camera disconnected by itself as well, unprompted.

Any idea what this means?

This is the same bug as in the D800 where bulb is not fully functional over USB but is working with a serial cable.  Try a regular picture (non-bulb) that should work... but limited to 30 seconds until I fix this nasty bug... or... do you have a serial cable?

You need to install in a new folder.  You are installing in previous beta folder and when you do that the old key prevails.

new folder = new key.

I have been installing in a new folder, same result. I really want to use this programme I have found it so useful, but I am now struggling to reload it, can you help>

Then you did not download the latest BETA 02e.

If you download 02e and choose a new folder during the install the beta is good until mid-October.  I just tried it again and this is the case.  So you did not install beta 02e or you did not install in a new folder <_>

1) Make sure you donwload 02e.

2) Make sure you install in a new folder during the installation, accepting the default folder will not work.

Keep us posted,

Hi,

Now it seems more serious on D800.  I even cannot connect to the camera.

In addition, once I attempt to connect to D800 (and fail), BYN freezes.  It cannot

be turned off unless I go to task manager to end the processes.

Also, I found that if I launch beta02e and do nothing, it can be closed normally.

However, I see that after it is closed, there is still a process called

O'Telescope BackgroundWorker Console running.  It has to be ended in the

task manager.

I attach the log files for the instance that failed to connect to D800.

Cheers,

Wei-Hao

Hi Wei-Hao,

The BackgroundWorker will stay running for a period up to 1 hours after you closed BYN.  This is to be 100% positive it is done it's work before closing.  In 99% of the case, if you have no images in the queue (blinking number in the camera information center) there is no work left for it to do... but if you recently completed a planetary recording the AVI encoding may still be running... for that reason the background worker stays on for up to 1 hour but will not concume any cpu resources if it has nothing to do so there is no harm in having it running as a precautionary measure; otherwise some remaining files in the queue may not be copied to you final download folder.  You do not and should not kill the process in task manager.  This is by design.

I'm not sure what to say about the D800 not connecting... but it does look like you may have a card in it with lots of images.  Could this be it?

I give up !

I edited your post and removed the key.  NEVER post a key on the internet, not even a trial/beta key!!!

Incidentally I did try the key you provided AND it is still good for 33 days; so there is something going on at your end for sure.

Is your computer date set to today?

How many times did you start BackyardNIKON.  There is a cap of 100 application start.  Is it possible you started BackyardNIKON 2e over 100 times since it was released?

I see.  I emptied the card and now it connects.

Does this mean I should always keep the card clean?

Yes, sadly this is a Nikon SDK issue I have no control of.  When the SDK first sees the camera it automatically indexes all images on the card BEFORE giving control of the camera to the calling program.  If you have hundreds of images this can take a few minutes and during that time BYN is held hostage <_>

Sadly the only recourse is to empty the card of image without a card.

Computer date is ok.

I may well have started BYN over 100 times as I have been setting it up with my telescope and camera in my study and practised getting used to the programme. Actually only used it outside a couple of times.

Enjoyed using it, so where do I go from here?

Can I purchase it yet?

Thanks

Max

Guylain,

Many thanks for sending me  the key,

That works fine, what happens in 30 days time?

Does this have a cap of 100.

I know that it may seem a lot but it all new to me and setting up the scope/camera/laptop means that I have been opening it many times.

Mainly due to checking usb ports and connections.

But this is currently working fine.

I also obtained one of those cables from Sreve which allows me to have bulb over 30 sec with my D90 and that works fine too.

Many thanks Max
