Connect my EOS

scottabennett

Question

Could some help me connect my (just bought)Canon EOS 200D to BackyardEOS. I have the newest premium edition and my camera connects to the laptop (Win10) via a USB cable. When I hit the connect button and chose the MADE AFTER 2014 choice - the software (or windows) make an odd noise and the connection doesn't work. The camera is listed in the Device Manager so I know Windows is recognizing it. But I'm stumped in getting BYE to recognizing it.

Scott,

Just to be clear...What version of BYE are you running? The latest release (as of 12/27/2018) is 3.1.16. However there is a pre-release verion (3.1.17 RC2) that is also available. Also, to another user reading your post a year from now, "the newest" is vague.

The Canon (DIGIC 5/6/7 cameras manufactured after 2014) choice is correct for your camera.

Is the camera in Manual mode?

BYE uses the Canon SDK (a software library that is provided by Canon). The SDK does not support tethering via WiFi or Bluetooth, so both must be disabled in the camera. The only supported connection is via a wired USB connection.

This has been mentioned a few times already here on the forum.

You need to download 3.1.17.RC3 from the pre-release section for this model as the 200D was not released when 3.1.16 was released and therefor does not have what it takes for the 200D.

Regards,

Astroman - the premium version I purchased and download 12-22-18 is 3.1.16

Admin - since the version I bought is incapable of running the 200d and the pre-release is free, should I have paid $50 for the version that doesn't work?

The download file is free but you still need your paid activation key to use it.

You did not buy a version, you bought an activation key to use with any of the 3.1.x versions.  Your key will work just as well with 3.1.16 or 3.1.17 pre-release or not.  The only reason I haven't fully release 3.1.17 is that I still a few unfinished feature I need to complete and test.  However, the 3.1.17.RC3 is fully tested and is production quslity as-is.

I got your personal messages as well and I replied to it too.  There is no need to post here, on CN, and then send PM... they all end up being read by myself.  The support forum *IS* the most efficient way to report issues as I read every post several times daily.

Regard.

You did not say which version of BYE you are using. It needs to be newer than both the cameras.

The T1i and T3i are the same generation of cameras; both are DIGIC IV, so they should both work with BYE. So the T3i connected and let you take pictures, but there are no image files in the expected folder? Make sure that you have set Save To PC, and that the BYE Download folder exists and is writeable.

Please start a new thread in the future.  You issue is not related to the original post. It just makes things much more easier for anyone reading this in 1 year from now.

Did you save the image to PC or Camera only?

Did BYE display the images on screen while imaging?

Something else may be going on here. If you have set Save To Camera only, then the images will NOT be displayed on the PC screen since they are not downloaded to the PC with this setting.

I would suggest that you choose Save To PC only so you don't have to keep removing the images from the camera's memory card. Also, some camera models have trouble saving to the memory card because there is no definitive signal to BYE when the save operation is complete and the camera is ready to start the next exposure.

If the images were displayed in the BYE UI that I guarantee with 100% certainty that the images were downloaded. The only way to display an image is to download it first, no way around that.

This being said, if you still do not see your images in your download folder please look in the <My Pictures>/BackyardTEMP folder, they might still be there.

Keep us posted.
