Forum Oddities and Observations

s3igell

Question

Because I wanted to Explore this new Forum implementation (and because I'm a Software QA Engineer by trade), I've noticed a few "Oddities" and other "Bugs"...

1) The Profile "Location" field doesn't appear to be used anywhere, except in the Profile Display Header.  One would expect this useful bit of Profile Data to be displayed under the User Name in Forum Posts.

2) The Profile Signature Editor Validation routine seems to have some issues counting Bytes and reporting "Over Limit" values.  I attempted to post my "usual" Signature of 350 Bytes, only to be told that it was 457 Bytes OVER THE LIMIT.  Re-keying the same Sig text resulted in it's acceptance - with no indication of either it's figured char count or the actual Limit value.

Thanks for that.

1) I'll take a look, I may be missing a css rule.

2) I'll report that to websites toolbox, the service I'm using.

3) Forum Posts appear to be "Perpetually Editable" by their Poster.  Most Forums apply a Time Limit or block Edits once the Posting has been Read or Responded by others...

ummm... good point.  I've looked and looked and I can either allow users to edit (or not) their post altogether.  There is no time limit <_>

I'll also request this change requests.

4) Sticky Posts don't seem to get a "Unread Post" Blue Dot (nor does the "Blue Pin" change color once read), yet the Forum containing these Stickies will be "Blue Dotted" as "Contains Unread Posts" (and correctly "undotted" once all Stickies have been viewed).

The pin color will not change after reading a pinned post; that is expected behavior.

The blue dot indicating a post has been read or not should disappear after reading a pinned post, just like it does for non pinned posts.  I'll check that.

Thanks for the testing... so I might as well come clean... I still have some minor css issues regards a few links such as printing link, subscribe/unsubscribe, etc.

Actually I just tested it and it works has expected.

Is it possible that another post was added to the thread you while you were reading it and when you got back to the thread list it was still mark as unread with the blue dot because of the new post added while you were reading it?

I rather think that it was some issue with not initially displaying the Stickies with "Blue Dots" as Unread Posts.

I was meticulously working my way from bottom to top of this Forum, re-reading post-after-post (although NONE had a "Blue Dot") until I got past the "Lost My Key" Sticky.  Then the Forum-level "Blue Dot" went away.

I was pretty sure that I'd walked through all the Posts in this "General-General" Forum.  But since the "Lost Keys will not be Retrieved" message is very familiar and very old-hat, I can't swear that I had previously read this exact Post (but am sure there was no "Blue Dot").

Again, nothing that rates higher than a "minor oddity"...

But, since I reported it, and you followed-up...

I felt I owed you a further follow-up response.
