Canon 5d Classic not working

volent

Question

Hi,

I just got a classic Canon 5D and I am having issues with the bulb control.  I connect to the camera ok using the  Canon 210 drivers.  When I take a picture I get the error below.

Windows 7 Professional 32 bit

ShoeString Astronomy DUSB  - The DUSB software check software works ok with the camera.  Openning and closing the shutter

I tried the 5D in Manual Mode and Bulb Mode

I set the cable to DUSB

Log...

16:42:31  Canon drivers 'Canon210\' initialized.

16:42:32  5D CONNECTED!

16:42:39  Imaging session started.

-- When I click the picture

16:42:39  Imaging session cancelled
16:42:39  ERROR EDS_ERR_NOT_SUPPORTED : EDSDK.EdsSetPropertyData(cameraRef, SaveTo(11), 0, size(4), 1)

I have used Backyard EOS with my Canon EOS 1000D with no issues for a yerar.  Any help is appreciated

The Canon 5D is working now.  All I did is switch a SanDisk Ultra 8GB sd card in for a SanDisk Ultra II 8 Gig sd card.

The camera worked with both cards but not the software.  I did have the save to set to "PC".

Did you check to see you are saving to PC only.  This command is issued only when you try to save to card as well and we have established that this is not working for the 5D classic model.

Keep us posted.

Still no luck.  I reinstalled Windows 7 32 bit and same issue.  I ran it under Oracle Virtual Box XP and same issue.

I have also have a Canon 450D and it runs flawlessly under BY EOS.

I realize the 5D classic is ancient and I think I'll sell it or just use it for non astrophotography.

I love your software.  Thanks for your help.

Your first post indicated that you are having a problem with "BULB Control" with your 5D. You never said, so it is worth noting that in order to take BULB exposures with the 5D you MUST connect a serial shutter control (DSUSB) cable between the camera and the PC, in addition to the regular USB cable. That is 2 cables, in parallel, are required for shooting BULB exposures with that camera. You must also configure BYE to use the DSUSB cable for BULB images.

Reading the thread, you indicated that it did work when you first switched to saving images to the PC only. Was this due to the fact that you were taking short timed value (Tv) exposures? This would be typical behavior for a DIGIC II camera connected with only a single USB cable.

The 450D is a DIGIC III camera and it can take BULB exposures with only a single USB cable.

Yes,  I have both cables.  A mini usb  and a DSUSB.  The DSUSBCheck program works fine.  I can change the light color and open and close the shutter.

My first issue was I had the wrong firmware.  When I updated it worked. It was working for a while and all of a sudden stopped,  Almost acting like the firmware issue even though it has the current when I look at it in the menu.

When was the new firmware released? It may mean that you need to use a different version of the SDK, perhaps Canon215 instead of Canon210, because of the new firmware.  This may be worth a try.

I would also say that I cannot recall anyone saying that they "had the wrong firmware" before, or that upgrading the firmware fixed a problem. Nikon users who upgraded their firmware then had to select a newer SDK in order to function with BYN after a firmware upgrade.

Last year at the Astronomical League's annual convention Canon had a booth set up and they offered to tune up and upgrade any EOS camera, free of charge. I had that service done and saw no change in the performance of the camera or my ability to connect with it from either BYE or Eclipse Orchestrator.
