BYE Scare

Question

BYE has never failed me for the three years I have used until now.  I was ten minutes away from doing the eclipse and I started BYE.  The live view appeared to be working but I could not adjust anything, I then went to imaging mode and again it was on some sort of preview mode.  Naturally I was freaking out.  I started to download a new version of the program but was on a slow connection at the hotel.  I then noticed that my time on the computer was an hour off due to time zone change.  I fixed that but then I could not get to BYE as it started the download but never finished.  Freak up got worse as the eclipse started. I then just restarted the computer with new time.  BYE started but asked me for my code which I entered and it worked!  I was abler to set everything up before totality.  What happened?  Could the time zone thing stop BYE?  I love this program but don't wan't that to happen again.  Cheers Kurt

That fact that you could not adjust anything is something not related to time zone.  You had something else going on there for sure.

The licensing schema works by identifying each computer with a unique id, a non-identifiable code generated bases on a few parameters.  This id is used to make sure a key is not installed on 100's of computers.  A key can be installed on a hand full of computers over the years and this is seen as organic growth where a single user/owner uses and installs the software.

I suspect this id may have played a role in this and may have been enough to trigger the "This is not the same computer" event and asked to confirm your key.  However, I don't think the TZ is part of this... but it could be side effect of another parameter used.  This is the second report I get for this so it can't be a coincidence.  I'm going to look into for sure, the last I ever want to do is to deny access to the software to any legitimate user.

Regards,

The OP said "The live view appeared to be working but I could not adjust anything,"

This is what I am seeing with 3.1.14 and my T5i; at least as far as the Shutter value is concerned. The only value in the Frame & Focus shutter value is BULB. In addition, I only have some of the ISO values that are supported by the camera (100, 200, 400, 800, 1600). I have cleared my data cache.

This is very, very odd.  I don't get this at all and I did not change anything at all in there for at least 2 years.  However, a few things where changed in imaging mode to add 100 lines + manual suspend + disabling a line without moving the exposure value to 0.  I suspect a few events that I had to change may be the cause here as this control in F&F is based on the same inherited base control as the one in imaging mode.

I'll have to look into this deeper for sure.

I had a similar issue on 8/19. I was actually not planning on using BYE for the eclipse, but I was at a dark site 8/19, and wanted to do some imaging. BYE asked me for the username that I had licensed (same computer that I've used without questions 6 months before). Luckily, I remembered my username (I was at a place without network connections). I'm on v3.1.6.

hdtran, I am just curious. Did you change your time zone settings before BYE asked you to re-verify your license?

At some point on my eclipse trip, I was asked to re-validate my BYE license. I also changed my time zone info when I left Arizona. I never related the 2 occurrences, though. Now, I wonder.

Nope. I live in Mountain TZ; I traveled to Mountain TZ. I generally never adjust my computer's TZ (although I did switch from using Windows time server to NIST time server?).

I did not get a chance to test this but when I do and if this is really the case I will definitely address this; this should not happen as it has the potential to prevent a legitimate user to use his/her paid software out in the field if they do not remember their username.
