Newbie Connection Question

RWray

Question

I recently purchased BYN to use for the August solar eclipse.  I have my Nikon d7100 connected to a Dell laptop running Windows 10 via the camera USB to computer USB.  I can change ISO & aperture via the plan, but changing the shutter speed has no effect... the shutter speed readout remains at 1/60 regardless of the speed entered in the plan.  Do I need additional cable?  Not interested in doing exposures over 30 sec. as I have an alt/az mount.   Thanks!!

Yep, it is likely that the camera is not in Manual (M) mode. In that case the exposure may be selected by the camera's auto exposure circuitry. This will not work for astrophotography so you need to put the camera into manual mode so it will use the parameters provided by BYN without any adjustments.

Did you set the camera dial to "M"?

Wish it was this simple.  Camera IS set to Manual mode.  Even downloaded BYN to a different Windows-based computer and problem persists.

Thanks for your reply, Astroman.  In answer to your question,

1. The shutter value in the camera information center in BYN continually shows 1/60 regardless of shutter speed set in the capture plan.

2. I can set any larger value, including up to 20 sec., in the capture plan and the shutter sounds make it clear that it is  not open for that length of time.

3. The photos taken have identical exposures.

I've ordered a new cable.  Maybe that will solve the problem.  Any other thoughts or ideas are appreciated.

Thanks for the additional information.

What happens if you disconnect the camera from the PC, change the shutter on the camera and re-connect it?

It does not seem like a communication problem, so I would say that it is not the cable. It may be informative for Guylain to review the log files.
