guiding

Question

When using BYE the green square around a star and the star slowly move away from the intersecting green lines and my resulting photographs have star trails in them. It would appear that BYE is not making adjustments to my Advanced VX mount. How can I correct this problem? Thank you very much for your assistance.

Jimbob,

BYE does not make adjustments to your mount while imaging. That action would be performed by the autoguiding software; for example, PHD2.

You need to concentrate on making sure that the autoguiding software is working well. That can be done with BYE not even running.

While BYE does not make guiding adjustments to the mount during imaging, it can communicate with either PHD(2) or MetaGuide between exposures to request it to dither. Dithering adjusts the mount by a small amount in a random direction to spread out hot pixels. However, BYE's only control over the dithering step is when it is done. The guiding software manages the work and lets BYE know when the dithering is complete.

BYE does not itself do any AutoGuiding.

If you have a compatible AutoGuider, then you can use PHD2 to perform your AutoGuiding.  Then you can set BYE and PHD2 to Communicate with each other so that BYE can Request a Dither Movement and PHD2 will Perform it.

However, as you have an AVX Mount, you need to ensure that you have learned to successfully Polar Align it - All-Star Polar Alignment or Drift Align.  This is because unless your AVX is decently Polar Aligned, no amount of AutoGuiding will control the Trailing.  And even without the AutoGuider, you should be able to expect 60-90sec (or even 120sec) Exposures without Star Trailing, as long as you have done a decent Polar Alignment.
