What version of BYN is installed on the XP laptop?

When the USB cable is connected between the camera and laptop and the camera is powered on, does the camera show up as a recognized device in the Windows Device Manager? If not, you may need to install a Nikon low-level driver for the camera. Perhaps it is on a CD that came with the camera or is available to download from Nikon.

You might also consider upgrading from XP to a version of Windows that is still supported by Microsoft.
