Frame and Focus with BYN

dts350z

Question

So being used to BYE and Canon cameras, I was surprised not to see a 5x button on the frame and focus screen in BYN.

My normal focus technique is to use a bahtinov mask in frame and focus with the 5x zoom.

What is the recommended approach in BYN?

I tried clicking on the Bahtinov button and zooming that window but didn't get any consistent results/green circle as I moved through the focus zone.

Don't know if it makes a difference but this is a De-Bayered (monochrome) D5100.

Apparently the Zoom feature for Nikon cameras is difficult to implement. As you can see from this other thread, Guylain and Chris have been actively working on implementing it.

Try a bright star with FWHM or HFD metric, rather than the mask, as an alternative. Obviously you won't be able to do the 5X zoom until it is released.

I assume that you mean "un-Debayered" for a mono camera. De-bayering is the process of assigning the remaining 2 colors to each pixel (green and blue values to a red pixel, etc). This does not make much sense to do if the Bayer filters have been removed from the sensor because each pixel get all the light from the entire spectrum.
