monchrome D5100 and NikonHacker firmware

dts350z

Question

I'm buying a mono & astro modified D5100 and there is some discussion as to the NikonHacker firmware and BYN:

"1. It has a firmware from the NikonHacker team, which gives it several cool features as described here. The best part is, the firmware is reversal in a matter of minutes and makes no permanent modification to the camera.

2. I have only used it with DSLRShutter and earlier with a remote shutter release. In all honesty, I did hear that BYN might have some issues dealing with the modified firmware. If this is a concern for you, I can load it up with the stock firmware and it should work beautifully with BYN. "

The referenced link is: https://nikonhacker.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1821

Any insight into this? Is it true I should go back to the stock firmware for use with BYN?

Any issues/settings with a mono (de-bayered) camera in BYN/BYE?

Thanks

If the firmware modification is transparent to the Nikon SDK, then there will be no issue with BYN working correctly.

The problem comes in when the modified camera does not behave as expected by the Nikon firmware, or you would want BYN to recognize any new features that the modified firmware supports.

These limitations are similar to what Canon users have with the Magic Lantern firmware modifications.

If you are using this camera for astrophotography, there does not any reason to modify the firmware.

Well it looks like that link is dead at the moment, but I was told by an imager friend that has the same camera, though not de-bayered, that there are advantages for AP in that firmware.

From memory something about auto star removal that doesn't get turned completely off (even for "raw") and also clipped blackpoint. I can go find the discussion on Cloudynights, no doubt.
