Best Firmware Version for D5100

ChrisMoses

Question

Hi,

I was just going through the forums and saw a lot of talk about which version of firmware the camera is using. I have never upgraded my firmware and have had the camera for a few years. Should I?  Which version is the most stable?

Along the same lines, I've always been curious about the NikonHacker's firmware. Has anybody ever used it? Does it work with BYN?  Any tangible imaging benefits?

Chris,

Earlier this year Nikon released upgraded firmware for at least some models of their cameras.  There have been no reports on this forum about the advantages of the new firmware.  However, for those who installed the upgrade, there was no way to roll it back and the new version was not compatible with the Nikon SDK's that BYN uses. For those users BYN was broken until Nikon released new versions of the SDK's and Guylain was able to incorporate them into the newest release, BYN 1.0.5.

I would suggest that you educate yourself about the advantages you get from the new firmware before deciding whether to upgrade, even if it works with BYN.  As they say, if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it!

If you install any non-Nikon firmware, it may very well prevent the SDK from communicating and correctly controlling the camera.  In addition, whatever features are installed by the hack will not be recognized by the SDK or by BYN. If you do so anyway and you break BYN, you may have trouble getting support from Nikon and it is already documented on this site that such hacks are not supported. I would either skip the temptation or play with the hackware on a camera that will not be tethered.
