New D500 wireless accessory controls camera from up to 600 feet...compatible?

beckemd

Question

This is a very long shot. Nikon is coming out with the D500 any day now, a DX version of its flagship D5. Similar great ISO and the Same amazing low light focusing ability (-3 fstops) and now this:

Now I doubt this wireless controller would work with BYN but with 130mb/sec data transfer rates, I can dream can't I?

??? USB?  With my D7000 I needed to use the 8 pin connector for controlling the camera and the other connector to download images.  I assume that the 10 pin connector on the D500 is to control the camera and the USB 3 connection is for image download. Am I mistaken?

The question is not "Is the wireless interface compatible with BYN"? The real question is "Is it compatible with the SDK"?

Nikon barely recognizes that there are software developers who are using their Software Development Kits to write camera control apps.  Those SDK's are "not supported" by Nikon.  They provide them on an "as is" basis and do not guarantee their suitability for any particular purpose.

If Nikon releases an SDK for that camera, and the SDK supports full wireless control, then BYN should work just fine.

Canon's models with wireless connectivity do not work with BYE because they do not allow for control via the wireless connection, only image download.  In fact you must explicitly disable the wireless capability in order for BYE to work.

Also be aware that many of the large star parties (the Texas Star Party, the Winter Star Party, the Cherry Springs Star Party, for example) prohibit the use of WiFi to control your astronomy gear.  Even if the wireless control works, you should also make sure that wired control works, too.

It is good thinking to ask here BEFORE shelling out the $$$ and finding out that the feature is not useful!

Regardless, the D500, when connected to the computer by USB 3 fails to register with BYN.  Mind you the NEF files likewise are now not recognized by CS6 and must be converted to a DNG extension for processing. Perhaps this is the problem?

Yes, the D7000 cannot be controlled for BULB exposures via the USB cable. It requires a DSUSB cable to control the shutter. The regular USB cable is required for all other functions. This is indicated in the BYN Camera Support table. You will also note that the D500 is not listed in that same table so that model is still not supported in BYN. As part of the pre-support testing Guylain and Chris will determine whether a second cable is needed for BULB exposures. My bet (just a guess) is that the D500 camera will not need the second cable for BULB exposures. Nikon seems to have finally caught up with Canon in that regard.

Also Photoshop does not support DSLR raw file formats (.NEF and .CR2) natively. Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) can read and convert those files to a format that can be read by Photoshop.  ACR is also periodically updated by Adobe to support new cameras and file formats. The fact that ACR does not recognize the files from the D500 is another indication that the camera is still just too new. You need to be patient. It often takes several months for a new camera to be completely supported for 3rd party development. There is nothing that Guylain can do about that!

Well this is because it is not yet supported.  Camera support grid here.

Send me an email at support@otelescope.com and I will send you a download link.  The SDK is available but I need someone with a D500 to run a test or 2 before.

Thank you

Any further chance BYN will be compatible with Nikon's D500 via a 10 pin connection?

BYN uses the NIKON SDK which uses (to date at least) the USB connector to connect to the camera.

What are you trying/wishing to gain with the 10 pin connection?

Regards,
