Question

Is the temperature value included in the photo name.cr2 based on a temperature sensor installed in the camera that reads the temperature of the photo sensor?  When I called Canon they indicated the camera has no internal temperature sensor, and I'm trying to identify how the temperature value is derived.

Thanks Rick.  I've been using the AC power supply w/the live screen off and Backyard EOS Capture Plan Center to shoot the dark frames.  Duh, should have thought of the short exposure test to verify the temp. senor was reading accurately compared to ambient.

Well, whoever you talked to at Canon needs a course on the product they sell.

All Canon DSLR since at least 2008 does have an internal temperature sensor probe.  It is not positioned directly on the sensor but very close.

Canon adds this information in the exif meta inside the .cr2 file and this is where BYE reads it from.

And for a good laugh, you should send Canon a .cr2 and have them explain how they insert temperature data in the .cr2 file name :)

It depends. If the camera is running off of the internal battery, with LiveView on steady, the camera will warm considerably above ambient. It may be > 25 degrees F above ambient.

As a test you can let the camera sit idle for say 30 minutes and take a short exposure. Then look at the temperature.  It should be pretty close to ambient.
