Honestly this is one of those features that people go WOW over... but the FWHM or HFD focus measurement is easier to use.

If you do use a physical bahtinov mask I find that taking a 1 to 3 second shot and eyeballing the spikes is very accurate.

I have used the Bahtinov Mask feature and BYE's FWHM. Of the two I have come to prefer the Full Width Half Maximum (FWHM) feature of BYE. If you get a dead-on Polar alignment, and focus then on a near by bright star, using the FWHM feature is really superior to the Bahtinov mask. It also will give you some idea how much, if any, drift you have as the star will either remain in your field of view while focusing, or begin to drift. I use this too to verify how well I am Polar aligned, as well as focused. Also you're not touching the OTA, by putting the mask on or taking it off after you're Polar aligned. Just my experience for what it's worth. Dirty Harris, Colo. USA.
