Narrowband Feature request

AstroJeff

Question

I shoot alot of Hydrogen Alpha and I have seen in TheSkyX where it will allow you to only capture the Red channel.  Of course this yields a half res image, which is fine and DSS can do the same with RGB using super pixel but it would be better to skip that step.

Would it be possible to have BYE with a feature to capture only the Red channel for Lights, Bias, Flats and Darks?  You can do Green/Blue for OIII as well, and even a Luminance channel but red is most important.

:)

Thanks

Jeff

The RAW data format used within Canon's .CR2 files carries only the original Bayer Matrix data which represents all 3 Color Channels.  It is not until that RAW data is fed to an Image Processing App or a Data Conversion App that this data is "Debayered" and split into its component RGB Color Channels that then might be stored in a TIFF or FITS or JPEG file.  Other than storing the JPEG File that the Camera produces, you can go into BYE Settings and Check the "Create TIFF image file" in order to get output in that format.

However, as all Canon DSLRs are Color Sensors, data for all 3 Color Channels will be present.  This is usually the expected content for most Image Processing Apps, when they open a TIFF (or CR2) file from a Color Camera.  It is that Image Processing App, be it SkyX or Nebulosity or PixInsight or MaximDL which would perform the Color Channel Separation process.  All of these Apps have such a function.

Guylain has generally kept the Feature Set of BYE focused on the Camera Control and Image Capture functions, and eschewed dedicating Development Effort outside those areas.  Most of us BYE users appreciate that approach, as it allows us to count on BYE for these functions and leaves us free to choose the Image Processing / Planetarium / Mount Control / Plate-Solve / other processes Apps of our personal liking.
