On line, the list of supported cameras include the Z8. When I downloaded, installed, and opened the latest version, the Z8 is not listed in the camera selector box. Is the Z8 supported?

Yes, with the 3.5.0-RC9 pre-release. Nikon no longer provides their 32 bits SDK, you must use the 64 bits version for the Z8 to connect, link below.
