Live View not working in Frame & Focus

David_RS

Question

Hi.  I hope that someone could help with a little problem that has just occurred.

I have been using BYE for a while now with no problems but last night when I set up, the frame and focus screen would not let me use the camera in Live View mode.  It kept saying that my camera's dial was set to "P" which is never the case.  It's either on "M" or "B".  I tried changing lens and this worked for about 10mins before suddenly switching back.  I found that I could make some changes to shutter speed but they were limited to about 1/2000 or faster which is useless for night time shots and it means that it is very difficult (if not impossible) for me to frame my shots and absolutely impossible to set focus accurately.  I have tried switching laptops but with no success so it does suggest a fault with the camera but I wanted to check that there wasn't some unidentified bug with BYE.

An earlier post seemed to suggest that there may have been some change to camera settings but I haven't touched anything that I am aware of.  I took a screenshot (attached) which shows a message that BYE was unable to set LiveViewAutoFocusMode but that makes no sense.  If I can't fix this, then I am going to have find another software package to help drive my camera which will be very annoying as I really enjoy BYE.

Camera: 70D

BYE Version: 3.2.3 Premium Edition

Cheers

Your screenshot shows that BYE read Program from the camera as the shooting mode.

The Camera Information Center, where the shooting mode is displayed, are live values of what BYE has read from the camera.

I believe that  only some very high end models allow the software to change the shooting mode. For most models, you have to set the shooting mode via the physical control on the camera body.

Given that BYE 3.2.3 is mature and that nobody else has reported this, I would tend to think that your camera is at fault.

If the camera is causing the issue, I doubt that trying another app for camera control will fix it. I would expect to see the same behavior if you tested the camera with the Canon EOS Utility, which is Canon's free camera control app. If it, too, has the wrong shooting mode then you need to take your  camera to a shop or contact Canon about it. it could just be dirt or moisture affecting the shooting mode knob.

Hi.  I noticed the P value but the setting on the camera is either M or B.  If I try setting the shutter control to Bulb in live view, it changes in the camera info screen for about a second or two and then changes back.  No amount of changing the dial on the camera seems to work but the odd thing is that until a few days ago, it worked perfectly fine.  It makes no sense to me at all.  I will try the EOS utlity and see where I get to with that.

What is also weird is that if I switch to imaging, I can adjust whatever shooting settings that I want and it does it.

Well, you could try BYE 3.5.0. It will have a new version of the Canon SDK which may have some impact. It is in the Pre-Release section of Downloads. I recommend that if you use ASCOM at all, that you not install the X64  version of BYE 3.5.0. The other version is 32-bit which is compatible with 32-bit ASCOM drivers. There are very few drivers that are 64-bit only, so that is your best option.

UPDATE

I have resolved the problem.  Thank you for all your suggestions.

Feeling fairly daft but I hadn't spotted that the rocker switch on the camera was set to video mode.  I must have knocked it without realising.  Will now always check that.  Everything now works so can only assume it was that.
